The Voice judge Rita Ora breaks down with emotional admission
An emotional Rita Ora has shared a heartbreaking story on The Voice, admitting it wasn’t something she’d really spoken about publicly before.
The Voice judge Rita Ora has broken down in tears as she shared a heartbreaking moment with one of this year’s crop of hopefuls.
Sydney-based Aleisha Gam, 26, blew the judges away with her powerful – and emotional – rendition of Adele’s Make You Feel My Love, prompting all four to turn around and pitch for her to join their teams.
After being asked why she’d chosen that particular song, Aleisha explained that she was inspired by her mother’s battle with cancer.
“My mum’s been struggling with cancer for the past two years, so I felt like with this song, I could really change the lyrics and make it more about having her feel my love,” she told the judges.
An emotional Rita then spoke about her mother’s own battle with cancer and the impact it had had on her.
“I know how it feels to have a connection with a song and that the memory always sticks with that song,” she told Aleisha, as she broke down in tears.
“When she would go and get her treatment and she was losing her hair and stuff, we were teenagers, and it was really weird to see your mum not be the superhero you always think your mum is going to be.
“Because you never think your parents are going to break down in front of you … and you sort of need to put them together … but it’s OK, it’s also something she talks about, she’s a survivor.”
Rita added: “I just wanted to put that out there, I don’t really talk about my mum like that, I want you to know that. It’s hard, it’s really hard.”
Unsurprisingly, Aleisha chose to join Rita’s team to progress through the competition.
Before her performance, Aleisha opened up about her mum’s health struggles.
“My mum is my best friend, we have watched this show together for the longest time. We’ve even been to a live show together,” she told producers.
“About two years ago, my mum was diagnosed with oesophegal cancer, so she went through chemo and radiation. We’re all being super positive – and it makes it so easy when she’s so positive.”
The Voice continues on Sunday at 7pm on Seven.
