The Netflix reality show making 2022 more bearable
It’s one of the most unlikely hit shows on Netflix. But this series about cake is winning over fans.
Floods, new waves of Covid, MAFS: 2022 has not been a great year so far, but Netflix just dropped the antidote thanks to it’s new baking competition,Is It Cake?
After spending the last couple of days off work sick, in need of easy viewing from my bed and not up to replaying Gossip Girl for the millionth time, I scrolled through Netflix for something new to fit the bill. I found it in Is It Cake?
The show premise does exactly what it says on the tin: professional cake makers, who happen to be really damn good at making their cakes look like other things, try to fool the guest judges and win money.
Basically a group of bakers try to be one of the three picked for each round of cake making. They then have to pick an item to make their cake resemble, then off they go to create it. From there, three celeb guests are brought in and shown five of the same item (as in, five different shoes, or five different burgers) and they have to pick which one they think is actually cake. Who ever fools the judges, wins money. There’s a little more to it, but that’s all you really need to know.
We're talking cakes that look like bucket hats, rubber ducks, tacos and more. I’m not even a person who enjoys being in the kitchen, but I thoroughly enjoy cake.
I also enjoy being right, so trying to guess which item is actually cake before the judges happens to also make me happy. The judges range from famous food bloggers and chefs, to influencers and models, to Karamo from Queer Eye.
The show has been criticised for being a bit, lack lustre with the drama and high stakes, but those critics have no idea what they’re talking about. That’s exactly why it’s perfect.
What I really enjoy most about the show — especially as someone who never watches food-based reality shows (get in the bin MasterChef: there I said it) — is how damn NICE and supportive everyone is of each other.
From the host, Mickey Day, making lame jokes, to the contestants actually pumping each other up, to the judges clearly having a good time and not putting down anyone’s creation — this is the most wholesome show on offer right now, and it’s exactly what I need to soothe my 2022 heartache.
