The Bachelor’s Laura left humiliated after watching ‘trainwreck’ scenes with Matty’s family
SHE may have won Matty J’s heart on The Bachelor. But a moment in the finale left Laura so embarrassed she actually cried.
MOMENTS after Matty Johnson’s family declared they preferred contestant Elise Stacy during The Bachelor’s finale, he turned around and chose Laura Byrne.
With one decision, he found love but also made future Christmas lunches at his mum’s house pretty awkward.
During Thursday night’s final episode, the remaining two girls met Johnson’s mum and brothers for the first time and tried to win them over.
FINALE RECAP: ‘If you’re going to do it, just do it’
The family loved Stacy immediately. They did not have the same affection for Byrne.
During her time with the Johnsons, Byrne frantically monologued about herself and her career as a jewellery designer. In awkward scenes, viewers watched on as the 30-year-old crapped on endlessly and talked over Johnson’s family as they tried to cut her off.
Viewers copped a sobering dose of second-hand embarrassment. But no one was more humiliated than Byrne herself.
“It was absolutely cringe-worthy watching me meet Matty’s family,” Laura told news.com.au.
“I was in bed (watching the episode). I had to pull the covers over my eyes. I cried. I was so embarrassed. It was a trainwreck.”
Byrne said the experience of meeting the family was “nerve-wracking” and the pressure of trying to impress them became too much.
After meeting Byrne, Johnson’s brother Tom was upfront with his opinion: “I preferred Elise,” he told his brother.
It was an uncomfortable scene for Johnson and Byrne to watch when the episode aired. But Byrne says she knew how the family felt.
“Tom had actually said that to me on the day,” she said. “And I think that was one of the things that made me feel more centred because I realised I wasn’t getting across what I wanted to.”
Johnson said it was a difficult situation to be in, but knew he had to make the best decision for him.
“It’s interesting hearing it back. I always knew it would be tricky if my family gave conflicting opinions of the girls,” he said. “It made it trickier knowing my little brother preferred someone else. Ultimately, I was going to make decisions on what made me happy.”
So has Byrne come face-to-face with Matty’s Elise-loving brother since the finale was filmed?
Kind of.
“We spoke last night on FaceTime,” she laughed.
