Osher Gunsberg has fronted up to an “intense lie” he told Abbie Chatfield on the 2019 finale of The Bachelor.

The Channel 10 host appeared as a guest on the radio show Hot Nights with Abbie Chatfield, where he came clean to the former contestant about a pivotal moment on her season.

Chatfield, now 27, was one of the final two ladies vying for Matt Agnew’s heart in the final episode of the series, which was filmed in South Africa.

Gunsberg met with Chatfield for a brief filmed interview during the finale, just before she was to find out her fate from the Bachelor himself.

While Gunsberg remains neutral during the chats, so as not to give away the ending, he has now revealed he “100 per cent knew” she was about to get her heart broken, with Agnew set to pick winner Chelsie McLeod over her.

“I have lied to you, and it is the most blatant and most intense lie I have ever told,” Gunsberg told Chatfield. “I think probably in all of my years of reality television … When you stood in front on me in South Africa, I knew 100 per cent what was about to happen, and I lied to your face.”

Gunsberg added: “It’s the really hard part of my job is obfuscating the truth in an incredibly emotional moment, and I looked into your eyes … [And I said] ‘He’s excited to see you!’

“I’m incredibly sorry that I lied to you in that moment, I did it for the good of the show … And for a lot of money.”

A forgiving Chatfield conceded it all worked out for the best, adding, “If I won, I wouldn’t have had this career.”

In the end, Agnew’s relationship with McLeod soured after six months of dating, with the pair announcing their shock split just weeks after the finale aired.

Meanwhile, Chatfield’s career went rapidly uphill, with the star having enjoyed a meteoric rise in the Australian showbiz landscape. She won the 2021 season of I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!, landed her own radio show on the Hit Network, became a judge on Masked Singer Australia and also embarked on a sellout national live show tour.

And it appears her multiple opportunities have certainly paid well, with Chatfield dropping nearly $1.8 million on a Sydney apartment in May.

It marked her second property purchase, after acquiring a $1.45 million Byron Bay home last year.

Gunsberg added he was “so proud” of Chatfield’s success post-Bachelor.

“It needs to be said: You don’t accidentally get this job; you don’t accidentally get a job like what you do on Masked Singer. It’s only that because you work your ass off and I’ve seen how hard you work. It’s not an accident that you are where you are and are going where you’re going.”
