Channel 10 puts out casting call for ‘men and women’ to star in The Bachelor 2022
The network has put out a casting call for “men and women” to feature in the 2022 season of The Bachelor, suggesting a bisexual man will front the series.
Channel 10 is on the hunt for both “single men and women” to apply for the 2022 season of The Bachelor Australia.
The network put out a casting call on its official Facebook page ahead of the upcoming series, suggesting they could be casting a bisexual Bachelor for the first time in its nine-year history.
The alert read: “Are you searching for that special someone but just can’t seem to find them? The Bachelor is back with a whole new look for 2022 and we’re looking for single men and women who are looking for the love of their life.”
While there’s no news on whether or not an eligible bloke has been chosen, the decision to cast for both genders makes it clear Ten is open to finding a bisexual or pansexual leading man.
The casting call says filming will take place roughly between May and July this year.
Last year’s The Bachelorette Australia broke ground with youth worker Brooke Blurton, 27, becoming the world’s first Indigenous and bisexual Bachelorette.
The 2021 series saw both men and women compete for Blurton’s heart, in which she ultimately chose Darvid Garayeli over runner-up, Jamie-Lee Dayz.
However, the pair’s romance was short-lived, after they announced their break-up earlier this week.
The most recent Bachelor was Sydney pilot Jimmy Nicholson, who chose Sydney marketing manager Holly Kingston in the show’s finale, which aired in July.
Channel 10 is looking to make changes to the format after both The Bachelor and The Bachelorette suffered in the ratings last year.
The most successful Bachelor finale was in 2015, when almost 1.5 million people tuned in to watch Sam Wood choose now-wife Snezana Wood.
But since then it’s suffered a downward spiral, with part of the blame put on the fact that Nicholson’s season competed with Olympics coverage.
In an interview with Mediaweek in November, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand executive vice president and chief content officer Beverley McGarvey said the network needed to do “a lot of work” on the dating franchises.
“The thing we need to do a lot of work on next year is around The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. We’re very happy with Celebrity MasterChef and very happy with The Dog House at the back of the year. So now we need to go, ‘What do we do with Bachelor? Can we get it back to its glory days?’
“Often with those legacy formats, there are pivots that you can make, there are things that you can do, and shows like MasterChef and The Block that have been on the air for more than a decade prove that a format can go for a long time when you carefully manage it, and sometimes it’s cyclical.”
