Scott Cam reduces Block contestant Rachel to tears

A brutal dressing down from Scott Cam left this contestant in floods of tears, complaining she’d been publicly belittled.

Block contestant Rachel was reduced to tears during Wednesday’s episode of the show, after copping an earful from host Scott Cam about how she and husband Ryan were managing their budget.

Cam’s lecture came as he did his usual midweek walkaround of each worksite, usually done with presenter and real estate guru Shelley Craft in tow. With Shelley away sick, Cam enlisted 2014 Block contestants Kyal and Kara to accompany him.

Rachel and Ryan were clearly a little starstruck to be meeting this Block success story, and keen to show off what they had planned for their bathrooms this week.

Cam had other ideas – particularly when he learned that the couple had spent a whopping $1700 on a particular tile for a small section of their bathroom splashback.

“Oh my god, your budget is blown completely already,” Cam told them, as they tried to laugh it off.

“I know your budget. You went $12,000 over on the first bathroom, you clawed back to six – you’re now six in the red,” he said.

“That’s better than I thought we were! I thought we were 10 in the red,” Rachel joked.

Cam, however, was in no laughing mood.

“You shouldn’t be smiling at this, because none of that money’s going into landscaping. You guys have got no money and you haven’t started. You haven’t even asked me a question about [landscaping], you haven’t even thought about it, have you?” he asked them, before giving one final dire warning.

“I tell you what, in about five or six weeks’ time you’ll be doing nothing, because you’ll have no money,” he said as he escorted Kyal and Kara out of the room.

Rachel and Ryan kept on smiling – but once they were away from the cameras, Rachel could be heard breaking down in tears as her husband comforted her.

“I just want to go home … I’m just over it,” she sobbed.

In a chat to camera, Rachel said she’d felt belittled by Cam in front of two former Block contestants who she was eager to impress.

“We’ve only had a few interactions with Scotty since we’ve been here, and we just seem to be getting in trouble all the time,” she said.

And she was still upset later in the episode, as the cast met up for a dinner held by contestants Omar and Oz.

Relaying what had happened to some of her fellow contestants, Rachel once again broke down in tears – so Scott stepped in to clear the air.

“It happens. Sometimes I’ve got to get a bit stronger and a bit tougher – and you know why? Because I want you to succeed,” he told her.

Rachel said she “appreciated” the explanation – although they stopped short of hugging it out, at Cam’s insistence.

“We’re not close enough to hug yet,” he told her.
