Viewers were given a deeper look at cricketer Mitch Johnson during the gruelling third episode of SAS Australia after the 38-year-old opened up about his long-term battle with depression.

Johnson, a former Australian fast bowler, beat himself up during the episode for failing in a marksman mission.

The task was to be thrown into a mock war zone, disoriented, and try to figure out whether or not the marksman was an enemy or a friend.

Johnson failed to shoot when the enemy ran toward him with a gun.

The DS later bring him in for interrogation to get to the bottom of not only why he failed the task, but why it had affected him so much.

“In 2011, in South Africa, I got to the point where I wasn’t enjoying being a professional cricketer,” he said.

“I wasn’t enjoying being looked at and judged all the time. I just took everything personally. I was physically exhausted and I was mentally exhausted as well.”

SAS instructor Mark Billingham asked what his motivation was to come on the show in the first place.

“I just always loved SAS,” he said.

“Growing up, the army came to our school and I remember they tried to recruit in year 12 and I remember I almost joined the army six months after I finished high school. But then cricket for me – I got really lucky with that.”

SAS instructor Ollie Ollerton told him that they noticed his demeanour change after he failed the marksman challenge.

In what was one of the nicer interrogations, Mark told him that he shouldn’t have taken the failure so personally.

“I struggle with confidence at times and I’m in that transition now where I have been out of playing cricket now for 2 years.”

Asked if he had found that transition hard, he answered: “Yeah. I found out I have got depression. I think the depression was something I’ve had even from a younger age. Cricket sort of blocked things out of the way, it sort of hid the depression. But there were a lot of times where you go back to your room … you’re away from family and you start to dwell on things. Through my cricket career I just dealt with now. It’s just about me now moving forward and taking it upon myself and be active and to keep my mind going.”
