RHOBH star Erika Jayne’s blunt advice for Sydney Housewives: Constant feuds ‘mean you’re a boring human being’
REAL Housewives of Beverly Hills star Erika Jayne has some words of wisdom for her Sydney sisters: Stop tearing each other apart just for the viewers.
REAL Housewives of Beverly Hills star Erika Jayne has only been with the show for two seasons, but she’s already become one of the franchise’s most beloved and quotable cast members.
On her first Australian visit, the singer, actor and reality star offers up a little advice for her Sydney sisters — and tells television snobs where they can stick their views on ‘trashy’ TV.
You’re still a relative newbie to Real Housewives. Is reality TV what you expected?
Reality TV is a great thing, and I’ve done well there. I can’t speak for anyone else, but filming Real Housewives is a hard job. It’s a lot of hours, it’s a heavy schedule, and you’re expected to really remember everything you’ve said and get in there. It’s not easy.
I know you’re aware of reports of the Sydney Housewives being ‘too mean’ to be able to sell the show to the US.
Mmm ... you need to see humanity. It’s one thing to have a difference with someone, but don’t be shrill. You can’t fight just for a fight’s sake — that means you’re a boring human being.
I always say this about our cast: Kyle’s the executive producer of her own TV show. Lisa Vanderpump’s out there killing it. Lisa Rinna’s got a QVC line. Everybody’s busy, so it’s not just ‘Let’s all get together and beat the s**t out of each other.’ We have things that are going on in our lives: husbands, businesses. It has to be well-rounded.
Would you have any advice for the Sydney ladies, one season in?
Be yourself and don’t be afraid to sometimes be soft. You don’t have to speak all the time. Just be true to your heart. If you don’t feel like tearing someone apart, then don’t do it. Don’t do it because you feel like that’s the way you’re going to stay on the show.
You also moonlight as a pop star. At 45 you’re rocking these racy Britney-esque videos — do you encounter ageism in the music industry?
Do we tell a doctor ‘Because you’re X years old, you should sit down because you’re not good anymore’? I don’t subscribe to those old rules, because I believe that they are ways of keeping us from shining. I’m gonna do [music as] Erika Jayne as long as I want to. I don’t subscribe to living my life to someone else’s rules.
And I don’t want to be 21! I just don’t. I’ve done my 20s. You don’t know s**t in your 20s. I really rediscovered myself in my 30s. Life gets better as you get older, it doesn’t get worse. It’s why Housewives is a great thing, because if you play it right, you can have this whole rebirth, if you will.
You do see a lot of women over 40 on TV via the Housewives franchise.
Isn’t that great? It’s a great opportunity and a great thing for middle-aged women. I adore (creator) Andy Cohen, he’s been very good to all us Housewives. Smart man.
You’re here spruiking Hayu.com, NBCUniversal’s all-reality streaming service. What would you say to those who say reality TV is trash TV?
That’s kinda snobbish. Isn’t that always the easy way, to say something’s too tacky? I mean, trash? Sure, some shows are rougher than others. But there’s also some great takeaways from them. I swear, there’s some university in the States that uses Real Housewives as a study. I swear to god! I mean, Oprah watches Real Housewives. You’d be surprised about who watches Real Housewives.
