Oz and Omar’s ‘genius’ design detail Block judges absolutely hated

Omar and Oz were super-proud of one design hack on their property – but the judges immediately dismissed it as “stupid and tacky”.

A design hack lauded by Block host Scott Cam as a “genius” move last week copped an instant lashing from the judges during Monday night’s landscaping reveals.

The Block contestants Omar and Oz thought they’d come up with an ingenious way to hide their house’s large outdoor water tanks from view.

Their team mounted a large grafico screen in front of the tanks, with a photo of a country landscape printed onto it. They hoped it would seamlessly blend in to the Gisborne property’s existing views.

Cam may have dubbed it a “genius” way to hide the water tanks in a voiceover during last Wednesday’s episode – but the judges were unanimous in their disdain for it.

“Oh, that just looks stupid,” said judge Shaynna Blaze as she laid eyes on the screen. “It’s tacky.”

“It doesn’t work. Get rid of it guys,” said fellow judge Neale Whittaker.

Shaynna Blaze hated it – but Omar and Oz didn’t seem too offended.

Cam relayed to Omar and Oz that overall, the judges had found the screen “totally kitsch … totally wrong”.

Still, it didn’t hurt Omar and Oz’s scores too much, with the boys coming a close second to season favourites Tom and Sarah-Jane for the final judging of the season.

But it was a “regrettable” final judging result for this season’s most controversial couple, with Sharon and Ankur getting lashed by both the judges and Cam.

Cam noted that, while all the contestants had elements they still needed to finish off, Sharon and Ankur were the only team to make it to their final “tools down” with an almost entirely un-clad, unfinished shed.

“That’s on me (to finish) now, and that’s despite me giving you the budget to do it,” Cam told them.

Ankur protested that they were still “waiting on materials” to finish the shed – to which Cam scoffed.

“Mate. Everybody’s in the same boat. We’ve got to think about fairness in this competition, so I think we’ve got to revisit this – because it’s going to cost a bomb to do all that work.

We’re going to have to revisit this when it comes to finalising the reserve price, OK?”

Each team’s reserve price will be revealed ahead of the auctions during Sunday’s finale. All five homes are on the market with the same price guide of $4 – $4.4 million.
