Nine drops Ninja Warrior and Celebrity Apprentice as 2023 line-up revealed

Nine has unveiled its programming line-up for 2023 – and there were some notable omissions from the list, including one massive hit.

Fans have a big problem with the new season of Ninja Warrior

There were a couple of notable omissions when the Nine network unveiled its 2023 line-up on Wednesday, with one of the biggest Australian reality shows of the past five years nowhere to be found.

The line-up includes a handful of new reality TV offerings – including a Block-breakout reality show hosted by Shaynna Blaze called Country Home Rescue and another new show hosted by Scott Cam about the search for Australia’s most identical twins.

Elsewhere, Love Island, Married At First Sight, Lego Masters and The Block will all return next year.

But two big reality shows notable for their absence in Nine’s announcement were Australian Ninja Warrior and Celebrity Apprentice Australia.

It’s a surprisingly swift fall from grace for Ninja Warrior, which launched to a huge audience of 1.775 million viewers back in 2017. By the time its sixth season launched this year, that premiere audience had shrunk to just 562,000 viewers.

Celebrity Apprentice generated plenty of column inches with its celeb feuds – but didn’t rate as well with viewers.

Nine’s rebooted Celeb Apprentice also struggled in the ratings this year, shedding several hundred thousand viewers from the year before and only crossing the 500,000 viewer mark for the first time as Benji Marshall was announced as the winner during the finale.

Another show not mentioned at the Upfronts: The Sophie Monk-hosted Beauty And The Geek, which has aired for two rebooted seasons this year and last year. Monk will still be seen as host of Love Island Australia.

Kate Langbroek’s surprise new gig

Elsewhere it was revealed that popular Australian TV and radio personality Kate Langbroek is embarking on a new career move – as the host of a reality TV dating show.

Premiering in 2023, My Mum Your Dad will unite older single parents, looking for love a second time around. They’re chaperoned to their dates by their adult children – but what they don’t realise is their kids then secretly watch them as they try to re-enter the dating world.

Based on a preview shown at yesterday’s Upfronts, the series looks equal parts heartfelt and awkward, with plenty of cringe-worthy moments as the young adult kids watch on in horror at their parents’ attempts to woo new partners.

As well as being her first reality TV hosting gig, the show also marks a change of networks for Langbroek, who has been a familiar face to Ten viewers in recent years thanks to her regular (and occasionally headline-making) appearances on The Project, Have You Been Paying Attention and Hughesy, We Have A Problem. It’s unclear whether this new gig at Nine will affect her regular appearances as a panellist on The Project – news.com.au has today contacted Ten for comment.

Logies nabbed by Seven

The release of next year’s programming schedule comes just days after Channel 7 announced it had snatched Logies broadcast rights from rival network Channel 9, with the latter having aired the awards annually since 1995.

Seven today announced a “multi-year agreement” that will see Australian TV’s night of nights debut on the network from 2023.

A location is yet to be confirmed for next year’s TV Week Logies, which are owned by Are Media, but Seven West Media managing director and CEO James Warburton said the network had “big, exciting plans for the awards”.

“The TV Week Logie Awards are more than television’s night of nights; they are a treasured Australian institution and a celebration of Australia’s love of television,” Mr Warburton said.

“We are honoured to be partnering with Are Media to bring the Logies to Australia on Channel 7 and 7 plus. It’s early days but we have big, exciting plans for the awards in 2023 and beyond.”

It’s a major blow for Nine after it recorded dominant results in the ratings for this year’s event in June, with 885,000 viewers tuning in for the ceremony.
