A Rebels bikie boss who was engaged to a MAFS star has died in a horrific motorcycle crash in South Australia early this morning.
Shane Smith, 38, was killed shortly after 3am on Wednesday when he crashed his motorcycle at Redwood Park with a male passenger on the back.
The passenger, a 45-year-old Clearview man, was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are serious but not believed to be life-threatening, police said in a statement.
Mr Smith is the former partner of Married At First Sight star Stacey Hampton and the pair have two children together.
Speaking to WHO magazine in 2020, Ms Hampton shared how the couple met.
“I met him when I was really young – 19 – through mutual friends and I wasn’t aware of his lifestyle but I fell for him so quickly,” she said.
“He treated me so nicely, he was beautiful, loving, and I fell pregnant really quickly to him with our first son.
“At the time, I didn’t realise he actually had charges from ages ago that had come up – assault charges.
“I always like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I stood by him when he ended up going to jail while I was pregnant, and then my brother died [in a motorbike crash] the day my son was born.
“But Shane rang me every hour to make sure I was OK. He had his friends checking in on me. He’s honestly the greatest person … and I think he’s really ashamed of his past.”
On a Facebook page dedicated to Rebels members, tributes flowed for Mr Smith.
“Today marks another dark day for our club, we’re all in disbelief of the pass of our Brother Shane,” one person wrote.
“Our sincerest condolences to our brothers in Adelaide, Shane’s immediate family especially his four beautiful children.
“Another brother taken too soon, you will be greatly missed and never forgotten.”
The Adelaide Advertiser reports that Mr Smith was sentenced to home detention in January last year for meeting with criminial organisation members at a pub in Golden Grove.
Major Crash investigators attended the scene to examine the circumstances of the collision, SA Police said in a statement.
Ms Smith’s death is the 52nd on South Australian roads this year, compared with 66 at this time last year.
