Cam and Jules reveal what really goes on at MAFS commitment ceremonies

There’s a reason why MAFS commitment ceremonies are often packed with drama, with past contestants revealing what really goes on.

The Sunday night Married At First Sight commitment ceremonies are often packed with high-drama and emotional scenes.

And it seems Channel 9 producers ensure that’s the case by forcing contestants to endure overnight filming off the back of a boozy dinner party the day prior.

MAFS poster couple Cam Merchant and Jules Robinson, who starred in the 2018 series and are now legally married with their first child, revealed on news.com.au’s podcast Kinda Sorta Dating that they would often film the commitment ceremonies until 5am, and were “hungover to sh*t”.

“Our best effort was we got home at 4.30, 5am. When you’ve got a problem you’re on the couch for about an hour,” Jules told host Jana Hocking.

The commitment ceremonies can film for more than 6 hours.

“It was interesting to watch, some people on the couch were doing these ones (slouching), it was quite disrespectful to the other couples, but we found it as a place to sit and learn and the three experts, they’re very good at what they do, we saw them in action, but it’s a TV show, you’re only ever going to see the highlights.

“But it’s a really, really long time and you don’t get to see that on TV. It’s hard when it’s 3am and you had the dinner party the night before and you’re hungover.

“That’s why they do it. They set you up to be... You are real emotional. My mum says, ‘You embarrass yourself the night before and then they’re (experts) like ‘Why did you do that?’.”

This Sunday’s commitment ceremony looks like an emotional one yet again.

Cam added: “You’re usually hungover to sh*t on that night because the dinner party was filmed night before. I gave it a red hot touch up and loved every bit of it. Then the next day, my go to would be a sneaky Mars bar a pack of Doritos, salt and vinegar crisps, and then you finally get into there (commitment ceremony).”

The couple added there was a dodgy “poof” seat all the contestants were desperate to avoid, with producers assigning a different couple each week who’d have to sit on the uncomfortable chair.

“If you tune in and you see the outlook of the commitment ceremony, everyone’s on the couch and then theres this poof, little seat,” Cam said.

Jules added: “They plan where you sit and if you walk in and you’re on that one you’re like ‘F**k!’, I’m going to be uncomfortable for 6 hours.”

The pair trashed the “rate your partner” challenge, which sees contestants rank who they are most attracted to from the entire group.

It often sees people rank others above their chosen match, a recipe for drama and disaster.

“You tell me, how does that help a relationship other than a million viewers out there going, ‘Gosh this is good watching, this is a car crash waiting to happen’. They found a formula and they ran with it,” Cam said.
