Maggie Beer and Matt Moran stumped by vegan dessert on Great Australian Bake Off

One of the contestants on The Great Australian Bake Off has taken veganism to a whole new level, using a very unusual ingredient in his dessert.

The Great Australian Bake Off — Grand Final

It was vegan week on The Great Australian Bake Off, and non-vegans beware … there was some strange stuff being thrown into our beloved sugary treats.

In what was hopefully not a sign of the times — and menus — to come, one of the contestants revealed how he made cream without dairy for his vegan black forest slice in the opening challenge on tonight’s episode, which is available to stream on Foxtel.

Anston, 28, a Sydney student voice officer and a vegan, made his slice out of cherry and chocolate, cherry jam and layered it with — get this — chickpea cream.

We’re outraged. It can’t possibly taste good.

Offensive.
Offensive.

Having our back, the judges, Matt Moran and Maggie Beer, are also suspicious.

“So you soak the chickpeas then take the water out … how are you going to use it?” Moran asks Anston.

“I’m going to whip it,” he says with confidence.

“And that makes a cream?” Beer is confused.

“Yep,” Anston hits back.

“You learn something new everyday!” Moran replies.

When it came to tasting time, Moran and Beer are pleasantly surprised. That’s an understatement; Anston apparently nailed the flavours.

“Wow,” Moran says, gobsmacked.

“It is such beautiful eating, addictive in the flavour,” Beer adds.

Anston tells news.com.au vegan food can be delicious if the right substitutes are used.

“Do not blame the poor plant for a bad dish you made,” he says to me.

“Vegan cooking is very easy as it consists of you just replacing any animal-based products with plant alternatives, and these days you can find vegan substitutes in all groceries and big food retailers.

“However, does this affect the flavour? Not at all! It all comes down to your seasonings.

“Vegan food is delicious and healthy.”

While Anston is one of the favourites at the moment, fellow contestant Sonny, 26, took out star baker this week.

Sadly Sue, 70, was eliminated.

The popular baking show, hosted by comedians Claire Hooper and Mel Buttle, airs across 10 weeks and features a group of bakers as they are put through a series of challenges in search of Australia’s best amateur baker.

The Great Australian Bake Off is available to stream on Foxtel On Demand with new episodes airing on Lifestyle every Thursday at 8.30pm
