James Weir recaps Big Brother Australia 2020 episode 19

This one, single move could cost a Big Brother frontrunner the prize money. And it’s being branded a big “mistake”. James Weir recaps.

Sarah is evicted from Big Brother (Seven)

Big Brother’s frontrunners are blinded by their bromance on Monday night when one of them is gifted a knife and refuses to stab the other in the back – the let down leading to the exit of the underdog whose only dream in life is to one day own a Toyota Corolla with a sunroof.

Oh, what a feeling.

Sophie’s surprise return has reunited her with Chad and we’re treated to more night vision footage of them grinding on each other. Honestly guys, this is Big Brother not Bachelor In Paradise – get in your own single bed.

Despite finding televised love, Sophie is not losing sight of her goal.

“I had two dreams. One was going to the Olympics and that never happened. The other was Big Brother. To be able to stand there on the last day, it would just complete me,” she wells up. Honestly, you can dream of wanting anything in the world – there are no limitations – and yet all these bozos want in life is to appear on a revamped reality show from the noughties and a Toyota Corolla.

So we’ve got Sophie and Chad’s romance up against Mat and Dan’s bromance. And then on her own is Sarah – a lone wolf who dreams of winning the prize money all by herself before driving to the bank in a Corolla with the sunroof open.

Unfortunately, like her vehicle of choice, Sarah is not a speed demon and loses the night’s first challenge which automatically puts her up for elimination.

The winner of the next challenge gets to select the other nominee. Usually we’d just skim over these challenges but producers have finally put some thought into it.

All the contestants are locked in a box that’s being rapidly filled with water and they have to try crack open the padlocks on the lid before they drown. It’s honestly hilarious. More people should be faced with death in prime time.

This should be a segment every morning on Sunrise. Nat Barr would win every time.

Chad wins and he taps Mat as the second nominee but there’s a catch. Mat was awarded an advantage last week which means he gets an extra vote tonight. If he didn’t have this, it probably would’ve ended up a tie and Chad would’ve been the decider and booted Mat out.

Now, Dan is the decider. Will he vote out Sarah and dash her dreams of ever owning a Corolla? Perhaps he could surprise us all and completely snake out of his bromance. We hope so. We’re in the mood for a betrayal.

Mat is certain his bromance is real. He’s positive Dan won’t turn on him. Where’s Dan’s head at?

“I’m still weighing it up. I could very well vote for Mat,” he shrugs to us.

But to do this he’ll need to have balls bigger than his nose and honestly that’s impossible. Men are blinded by bromance. Strategy and sense are tossed to the kerb when it comes to – what Chad would call – da boyz.

Friendships are great until they get in the way of what you want, at which point they should be immediately severed and destroyed. We’ve got $234,000 in prize money on the line. That kind of coin could get you a top of the range Corolla with sunroof and the optional metallic paint. An opportunity like this doesn’t come up everyday.

Sarah feels the need to open Dan’s eyes to the fact if he and Mat make it to the final three, Australia may prefer his friend more. She breezes into the kitchen and proceeds to open up a sachet of Old El Paso to give the evening a spicy punch.

This episode needs a zest up.

“Tonight, don’t think about anyone – think about yourself. You can’t let other people hold you back. Do what you need to do to win that money,” she tells Dan, hoping to shatter the bromance and secure a few more days in the house. It’s the truth and if he doesn’t axe his mate then he’s ruining his chances. But there’s also a Corolla on the line, and Sarah will do whatever it takes – bromances be damned.

At the elimination ceremony, Kruges Zoom calls in and asks Dan if he’s going to dump his boyfriend.

Shrewd line of questioning, Kruges.
Shrewd line of questioning, Kruges.

But he’s blinded by the bromance and does exactly what we expect. Dudes before dough. Buds before bucks. Pals before paper. That’s all the alliteration I can think of.

“It could be a mistake for Dan to vote me out. Mat is a bigger competition for Dan if they were both to make the final three,” Sarah states the obvious as she climbs into the luxury chauffeur-driven sponsorship vehicle in the driveway.

She looks around at the supple leather interior and watches as the glow of the passing street lamps bounces off the polished woodgrain trims.

It’s nice. But it’s not a ‘Rolla.
