I’m a Celeb outrage: ‘You’ve hit rock bottom’
VIEWERS vented their anger and disappointment at Channel 10 and accused the network of hitting “rock bottom” as intruders were revealed on I’m a Celeb.
CHANNEL 10 billed them as ‘Australia’s most dysfunctional couple’ but judging by the viewer reaction they could have gone with ‘Australia’s most hated couple’.
One Nation co-founder David Oldfield and his wife, reality TV star Lisa Oldfield, were revealed as the latest intruders on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and viewers were not impressed, accusing the show of “hitting rock bottom”.
Media personality Andrew Mercado vented on Twitter: “David Oldfield was a vile racist on SBS’ First Contact and since then he has been rewarded with another reality show (Hell’s Kitchen on Seven) and now ANOTHER gig on #ImACelebrityAU How could you Ten? So not watching anymore.”
And he wasn’t the only person upset. Here are some other reactions on social media that didn’t contain swear words.
Oh man, I'd rather switch to #MKR than watch the Oldfields #ImACelebrityAU

And I'm out. Ex One Nation and current rampant racist who actually believes indigenous people should have gone extinct. You've hit rock bottom. #ImACelebrityAU

After teasing the reveal of who the intruders were all night long, Dr Chris Brown and Julia Morris didn’t announce it was the Oldfields until there was only 10 minutes of the program left.
And viewers didn’t even get to see the Oldfields interacting with the hosts. Instead a pre-recorded package of the couple talking about themselves was aired and it won’t be until Monday night’s episode until we’ll get to see them actually in the jungle.
Speculation was rife in the past few days that it would be the Oldfields heading into the jungle. KIIS FM stars Kyle and Jackie O even called Lisa Oldfield on Friday morning and asked her if there was any truth to the rumours.
“Look, I’ll be honest, they asked,” Lisa told the radio hosts. “But I don’t even have a valid passport … Maybe next year.”
She also joked that she wouldn’t be able to stand being in the jungle with her husband without “the buffer of booze and kids”.
David Oldfield is no stranger to reality TV having appeared on Celebrity Survivor Australia in 2006 and Channel Seven’s Hell’s Kitchen Australia last year. And his wife, Lisa, was arguably the most controversial cast member on the Real Housewives of Sydney last year. It’s unknown if that show will be returning for a second season.
Oh, and by the way, Kerry Armstrong was voted out of I’m a Celeb on Sunday night.
