There’s been much discourse on this season of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! regarding Hollywood star Frankie Muniz’s hatred of the humble strawberry.

The former teen actor, now 38, has never taken a single bite of the fruit in his life, claiming if he was made to eat one, he’d probably tap out of the South African jungle entirely.

Speaking to news.com.au a few short days before going into camp for the Channel 10 show, Muniz dug deep into his childhood trauma to discuss what triggered his strawberry resentment.

“I don’t normally talk about the fact I don’t eat strawberries, but when I was a kid, my family used to get the Neapolitan ice cream,” the Malcolm in the Middle star began.

“If I got the smallest sliver of strawberry in my vanilla or chocolate, not that I even saw it, but you would taste it. And it ruined my ice cream that whole night.

“So in my head, strawberries are just evil and I won’t try them. Not even a strawberry flavoured milk.”

It’s not just a lack of strawberries missing from Muniz’s diet.

The race-car driver, who described himself as the “pickiest eater on the planet”, added he tried a pear “that wasn’t in a can” for the first time a few weeks back.

“I’m too set in my ways,” he added.

As for what he does eat, Muniz said steak, potatoes and cheeseburgers make up his day on a plate.

“That’s on rotation. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” he said.

“Coming onto this, everyone’s like ‘What are your fears?’ I’m a little afraid of everything. Heights. I don’t want to get bitten by anything.

“But, I don’t really want to tell them my real ones because the truth is, if they put a strawberry on a plate, I’d tap out.”

Muniz is the ‘Hollywood child star’ who signed on to star in the long-running Network Ten series, where he’s joining the likes of Aussie stars Candice Warner, Michelle Bridges, Peter Daicos and Skye Wheatley.

Muniz currently lives in the US state of Arizona with his wife Paige and two-year-old son Mauz Mosley, having left the bright lights of Los Angeles back in 2008 to pursue an open-wheel racing career.

The actor, who was dubbed “Hollywood’s most bankable teen” in 2003, said he made the decision to step away for his mental health, which was suffering due to his ongoing “impostor syndrome”.

“I never felt like I fully fit in the Hollywood world, even though I was in the world. I was nominated for Emmys and Golden Globes, and I was going to all this stuff, and I was there, and I was like, how am I here?” he said.

“I hated LA, so I kind of stayed in my own little world, my own little bubble. And moving to Arizona, I did it on a whim, and I realised immediately that I started looking up. I started enjoying looking at trees and birds in the sky. Going to the grocery store was a fun thing. You don’t get that in LA. It’s a miserable experience.”
