‘I know him’: MAFS bride pleads for new groom
On the premiere episode of Married At First Sight Australia, viewers watched in horror as a bride revealed her groom had ghosted her.
After a romantic ceremony, the first MAFS wedding took a dramatic turn.
New bride Carina, a 31-year-old digital marketing manager from Perth, dropped the shocking revelation that she and her groom had already met.
Everything seemed so perfect, the groom even delivered his vows in French to be extra romantic.
However, little did viewers realise that the smiles of the seemingly happy new couple were hiding a huge secret; they had already been on a date together.
As the ceremony wrapped up, viewers watched as Carina disappeared off camera to talk to a producer.
“What the f**k? Am I gonna get a different guy or what?” she furiously whispers. “Is there a different option? I KNOW HIM. For f**k’s sake!”
She went on to explain that a few months ago she had drummed up a connection with Paul, but things had fizzled out after their first date, despite her desire to meet up again after the first went so well.
“We matched eight months ago. Facetimed and messaged and then we went on a hike. But then he just stopped texting.”
“Knowing we have literally crossed paths I’m just so disappointed,” she continued.
As Carina explained the story to a producer, Paul was telling his friends that he felt awful about the way he had acted.
“I remember thinking, I was frustrated. It’s the right person but the wrong time. I was going through a bit of a rough patch at the time. I was not in the right headspace at the time,” he confessed. “I remember feeling it felt like a massive loss.”
In the end, Paul did his best to explain his actions to a clearly upset Carina.
“I wasn’t in a good headspace,” he said. “It’s totally my fault it didn’t lead to a second date. I kept cancelling. It feels like the universe is giving me another chance again.”
“You know when a guy is saying all the right things? It feels a bit like that right now,” said Carina in her confessionals.
Thankfully for the couple – and producers – his apology worked, and they both decided to go ahead with the experiment and see if they can make it work the second time around.
Speaking about the moment on Today Extra, Carina admitted she was shocked but not entirely surprised, given Perth’s limited dating pool. “Yeah, it’s a little bit difficult here in Perth. The dating pool is quite small. I guess it was a given, maybe,” she told co-hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jefferies.
