Hopkins cops fine as she’s booted out of Australia

Right-wing commentator Katie Hopkins has been booted out of the country, but not before she copped a fine for breaching hotel quarantine rules.

Katie Hopkins axed from Big Brother and booted from Australia

Controversial far-right British media personality Katie Hopkins has been fined $1000 and booted from Australia after she boasted about flouting the rules inside hotel quarantine.

NSW Police were notified of the alleged breach at her hotel in Sussex St, Sydney, about 8.45pm on Friday.

Following inquiries, Hopkins was issued a $1000 fine for not wearing a face mask.

Hopkins has since been spotted at Sydney Airport looking downcast as she prepares to fly out of the country.

The media personality is no stranger to confrontation and controversy, having been fired from English radio in 2017 after calling for a “final solution” after the Manchester Arena terrorist attacks.

Once again, Hopkins is facing real consequences for her comments.

“The fact that she was out there boasting about breaching quarantine was appalling,” Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews told ABC Monday morning.

“It was a slap in the face for all those Australians who are currently in lockdown, and it‘s just unacceptable behaviour.

“Personally, I’m very pleased she’ll be leaving.”

In her videos from hotel quarantine, Hopkins mocks Australia’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and boasts about flouting quarantine rules.

“I have always called lockdown the greatest hoax in human history”, she says in one video.

In another, she boasts about “frighten(ing) the shit” out of hotel quarantine workers by opening her door naked with no face mask on.

Hopkins was granted a travel exemption so she could appear as a housemate on Channel 7’s Celebrity Big Brother.

Ms Andrews told ABC the state government approached the federal government arguing there was an economic benefit to Ms Hopkins’ visit. It was an exemption that “happens reasonably regularly”, according to the minister.

But given Hopkins’ highly controversial opinions, many are now questioning how reasonable and fair this exemption was.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese slammed the Morrison government for granting the visa.

“Australia should never have let this right-wing nut job in,” he told reporters in Devonport on Tuesday.

“It is a disgrace. The fact that the federal government gave this woman a visa is outrageous and an insult to all those stranded Australians overseas.”

In her videos from hotel quarantine, Hopkins referred to migrants as “cockroaches”, described Islam as “repugnant”, and said people with dementia should not be given hospital beds.

When pressed further by ABC on why Hopkins was given a travel exemption, the Home Affairs Minister defended the government's visa system.

“We need people to be able to come into this country where there is an economic benefit for them to do so,” Ms Andrews said.

“People will be supported to come into the country where states are sponsoring them on the basis of economic benefit.”

Ms Andrews said the Australian Border Force acted quickly to cancel Hopkins’ visa and she would be deported as soon as possible.

“I‘m hopeful that it will happen imminently,” Ms Andrews said.

In her Instagram live videos, Ms Hopkins described ‘scaring the shit’ out of hotel quarantine workers by opening her door naked and with no mask on.
