Former Block contestant Kirsty Lee Akers predicts dire result for auctions

A former Block star has cast a dark shadow over this weekend’s auction, saying she has a “bad feeling” about how the contestants will fare.

One of last year’s Block contestants has issued a worrying prediction about the results of this Sunday’s finale.

Kirsty Lee Akers, who raked in $301,523 last year on the show with husband Jesse Anderson, says she’s got a “bad feeling” about the auctions of this year’s ambitious country properties, which each currently have the same price guide of $4 million – $4.4 million. 

“I hope I’m wrong but I have a really bad feeling about this year’s auction,” she told Woman’s Day this week.

“Interest rates have shot up and the market has cooled, plus everyone is saying these homes will sell for $5 million, but some of the better homes recently sold in that area [the Macedon Ranges in Victoria] only made about $2 million.

“That’s a huge price difference.”

Kirsty also made mention of the dire recent result of The Block New Zealand, which saw the winners make a profit of just NZ$4,000. The team who placed second went home with just NZ$100, sparking calls for the show to be axed.

On Monday night, this year’s Aussie contestants faced one last judges’ walk-through, and the comments weren’t pretty for one team.

Host Scott Cam noted that, while all the contestants had elements they still needed to finish off, Sharon and Ankur were the only pair to make it to their final “tools down” with an almost entirely un-clad, unfinished shed.

Savaging their efforts, he said their reserve price may need to be altered to reflect the end result.

Sharon and Ankur copped a brutal final judgment.

“Everybody’s in the same boat. We’ve got to think about fairness in this competition, so I think we’ve got to revisit this – because it’s going to cost a bomb to do all that work,” he said, while judge Neale Whitaker suggested their house would need to be marketed as a “renovator’s delight”.

Each team’s reserve price will be revealed ahead of the auctions during Sunday’s finale. All five homes are on the market with the same price guide of $4 – $4.4 million.

At the end of the episode, favourites Tom and Sarah-Jane earned the final win, with a perfect score of 30 (with help from their bonus point gnome).
