The reality TV star made some serious waves when he arrived on the island, from sparking questions about his relationship status to dropping a major bombshell.

When placing 24 men on an island for a dating series, you’re bound to have some characters among the mix.

None more so than Vernon Lyon, who with two gold chains and a mullet entered as an intruder on BINGE’s hot new dating series, FBoy Island Australia.

“It’s kind of cool to come in as an intruder and kind of shake things up,” he tells news.com.au.

He shook things up alright. From the moment he stepped foot inside the villa, Vernon was electric, immediately catching Molly O’Halloran’s eye – one of the three women trying to find love among a dating pool of 24 self-proclaimed FBoys and Nice Guys.

And the feelings were mutual for Vernon.

“Straight away her blue eyes got me,” he recalls. “I noticed too when she started talking she had a bit of sassiness. I was like, ‘Oh, she’s gonna be fun.’ She caught my eyes straight away, just naturally.”

However, his competition were eyeing Vernon for other reasons, with one contestant, Mitch, adamant Vernon was in a relationship just one week before he arrived in the villa.

In last week’s double episode, Mitch explained to the house that he was chatting to a girl on Instagram who said she was dating a guy called Vernon, who dumped her to go on FBoy Island.

With Vernon’s unique name, Mitch was convinced he was the same Vernon the girl was referring to.

Vernon denied it to the blokes and when confronted by Molly. He said there’s nothing to explain – he and the girl had already split months before filming last year.

“We were separated for months before the show,” he tells us. “But what are the chances that some random bloke messages some random girl and we just happened to go on the same TV show? I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘This has gotta be a stitch up.’ But yeah, just happened to be unlucky.”

Behind-the-scenes on FBoy Island

With his ambiguous dating history, viewers swiftly placed Vernon in the FBoys category – and they were right.

In a surprise move, he breaks the competition rules and tells Molly he is indeed an FBoy who went on the show for the $50,000 cash prize.

Therefore, if Molly ends up choosing Vernon in the end, she could lose the prize money as he has the option to bag every cent for himself. So it’s in her best interest to choose a Nice Guy among the contestants as they split the cash equally.

However, Vernon had his reasons for revealing his true colours to Molly.

“When as I was going onto the show, my eye was one hundred per cent on the money,” he admits. “But then as I met Molly, the idea definitely changed. Once I met Molly, I kind of didn’t think the money is such a big prize anymore. I thought Molly was a better prize than that.”

“I didn’t really mean to tell her. I don’t know why I told her,” he says of coming clean. “I had feelings for her. She’s such an awesome girl. I was starting to like her, which was a mistake on my behalf, but she was a good girl.”

Vernon recalls a conversation with Molly in which she asked him not to “embarrass” her “in front of Australia” by being an FBoy.

“That kind of got me. I was like, ‘I don’t wanna make her feel sh*t on TV.’ And it kind of hit my feels and that’s when I was like, I gotta tell her I regret I went on the show as an FBoy.”

Vernon says his big status reveal did not affect his relationship with Molly in the competition. If anything, it brought them closer as she “kind of trusted me and realised that I wasn’t gonna lie her”.

However, Vernon’s fellow contestants were livid because his bombshell revelation meant the playing field had to be levelled and the men had to all reveal their status.

“I think everyone knows it’s just a game, but they were still a bit upset because they’re like, ‘Oh, now we’ve got no chance,’” he says. “Well, it’s only the FBoys that were upset.”

One contestant, Caleb – who viewers didn’t doubt was an FBoy from the start – was the most disappointed of all, Vernon says.

“He’s like, ‘Oh, I’ve got it in the bag. And then when that happened, he was just like, ‘Man, I can’t do nothing. Now you’ve got me, you screwed me.’ And then he didn’t want to talk to me for like two, three days.”

One has to wonder, what’s so great about the FBoy lifestyle, anyway? Even Vernon admits it has its pros and cons.

“FBoys aren’t bad. They’re always having fun, always doing something, enjoying life,” he says. “The cons are being in a relationship is absolutely amazing. You’ve got someone there every night, you can build a friendship and be best friends, that kind of thing.

So can an FBoy every change his ways?

“I’ve always said, if you find the right one, you’re gonna settle down,” he says. “I mean, some out there won’t do that. But I’m not one to sleep around – I won’t cheat. When I’m in a relationship, I’m in a relationship.”

FBoy Island is now streaming on BINGE.
