Depinder’s invention test dish might be the most creative one yet

MasterChef brings back the beloved Invention Test challenge, pushing the contestants to be creative and come up with a fun, but delicious dish.

Things are getting super creative in the MasterChef kitchen.

During Monday night’s episode of MasterChef, the show brings back the classic ‘Invention Test’ challenge that was once a staple of the show.

In a clip shared with news.com.au, contestant Depinder really gets creative by making a green curry cake.

Choosing a simple, humble pantry ingredient of onion, the home cook turns it on its head by creating a gorgeous little cake that looks like a sweet dish.

The inventive part is that it will taste completely like a green curry.

“I’ve chosen the onion, I think this dish is inventive because I’ve never seen a green curry cake before,” she says.

“It will be like a green curry but in dessert form.”

That is some Heston Blumenthal kind of dish in our eyes.

“Previously when I’ve made Thai green curry I’ve used shallots in the green curry paste... white onion and shallots are very similar,” she explains.

“I think it’s going to play on that sweet, savoury thing.”

Depinder has been doing exceptionally well on MasterChef, something that she herself has noticed.

“Being here in MasterChef has taken my cooking to a whole new level. I think it’s the time and the pressure. It just has this effect on me that it just makes me do even better than I normally would,” she says.

Depinder explains that she will also be making a coconut ice cream to go with the dish.

“I think I’m going okay right now, then I’ll start working on my caramel and other garnishes,” she says.

“I want my cakes to look like little pretty cakes that you would buy from a cafe or pastry shop. I want to have one cake per judge, and I want them to take a bite thinking it’s just your normal cake and then they’re going to get hit by the green curry flavour.”
