Bride and Prejudice: Son’s emotional plea rejected again by unmoved father

AUSTRALIA reeled when a conservative mum rejected her own son’s relationship on Bride and Prejudice. His dad only added to the agony.

Chris makes an emotional plea

A SON has again been left heartbroken after his upcoming marriage was rejected by his unmoved father.

In recent episodes of Seven’s reality series Bride and Prejudice, viewers witnessed Chris, the adult child of a devout Jehovah’s Witness mother and a very traditionally-minded father, visiting his parents’ home to again ask for their acceptance.

With his wedding to partner of three years Grant drawing closer, the 39-year-old desperately wanted his parents Yvonne and Geoff to attend the wedding in Palm Springs. And in startling scenes, Yvonne said she couldn’t attend or support their wedding because of her religious beliefs.

“From my perspective, it’s not possible. Because, you know I’ve got very strong beliefs on that situation,” she told her son. His father Geoff agreed.

And on Wednesday night, Chris made one final attempt to reason with his father and change his mind. But it proved fruitless.

“So I wanted to talk to you about something. It’s what I talked to you about the last time I was up,” Chris eased into the conversation.

And an emotionless Geoff made his stance known immediately.

“Won’t be any change in the answer,” he told his son.

When Chris admitted his concerns that his parents’ didn’t truly know him, Geoff remained aloof: “I probably don’t. The Chris we knew is long gone.”

“No, I’m the same guy,” Chris said. “I’m a good person, I care about people. I look after people. I’m good at what I do. The only reason I’ve kept my distance is I feel I can’t talk about my personal life. I feel like I can’t talk about anything that’s going on in my life other than work. And there’s more to me than just work.”

Chris said he wanted his mum and dad to get to know his partner Grant and share in their life.

But Geoff’s response was simple.

“I don’t hate you. It’s just, some of your choices work me up the wrong way. It’s not the way I was brought up. I don’t wish you bad but there’s some things I can’t accept. It’s got nothing to do with religion or anything.”

As Geoff ended the conversation and said he’d better go, Chris handed over two plane tickets he’d purchased for his mum and dad to attend the wedding in Palm Springs.

Whether they’ll attend remains unknown.

“He hugged me for the first time since I was 18,” an emotional Chris told Grant later, summarising the futile catch up. “And he said he didn’t hate me. I’m sick of it.”

Since the series began airing, viewers have remained confused as to why Chris’ parents can’t come to accept their son.

And earlier this week in an interview with Kyle & Jackie O, Chris revealed some information about his mother’s past that makes her objections all the more perplexing.

“Religion gives my mum structure in her life — she found it when she was a bit of a wild child,” he said of his “full-blown Jehovah’s Witness” mother.

“No-one knows this, but my mum actually used to work in gay bars, back in the day.”

“It’s more so about the beliefs, I don’t know that it has anything to do with what she experienced [in gay bars],” Chris added.
