Bach in Paradise star slammed over same-sex comments: ‘Get in the sea’
Two women went on the first same-sex date in Bachelor In Paradise history. Contestant Paddy’s “gross” reaction has viewers fuming.
Bachelor in Paradise contestant Alex Nation broke new ground for the reality series in last night’s episode, choosing Brooke Blurton to go on the show’s first Bach same-sex date.
Alex’s announcement that she’d like some alone time with Brooke was met with expressions ranging from wild-eyed wonder to intense confusion by the male contestants:
But it was 28-year-old gym manager Paddy Colliar’s comments that caused the most controversy among viewers.
“Absolutely hectic, man. I’d love to be a fly on the wall between those two,” he said, wolf whistling.
“Hopefully there’s oil and, like, massages involved,” he speculated as the pair walked off into the sunset together.
“And we watch it back. That’s hot. That’s actually hot. You can pause live TV now, so I would LOVE to pause it on that. Mate, I’m just tellin’ it how it is. We’re all thinking it.”
In fact, we’re not, Paddy: Two queer women are allowed to express an interest in each other without having you fetishise them, as viewers were keen to point out.
Paddy...is very gross and no, absolutely not ~everyone~ was thinking they would like to fetishise the two women going on a date? Get in the sea fam itâs literally right there. #BachelorInParadiseAU pic.twitter.com/LKKiQlSOFb

One thing Iâll say for #BachelorInParadiseAU is the only thing people seem to be freaking out about is how the same sex dating will affect the roses. No one (aside from Paddy the peanut) is blinking about it otherwise. Or the editing is saving us from it.

Not to out myself as someone who watches #BachelorInParadiseAU (just kidding, I clearly do) but I hope Paddy dies alone for still being the kind of guy who fetishises relationships between queer women in 2019

Weâre going to deal with Paddy once and for all. Two girls being attracted to each other isnât some little show for him to watch. Weâre going to take that bitch down. #BachelorInParadiseAU pic.twitter.com/fPH71uMXZ7

Wow Paddy, I had no idea women only date each other as entertainment for men. #BachelorInParadiseAU

Yes Paddy. I forgot two women who are interested in each other was just pornographic content for yourself #BachelorInParadiseAU

In the end, Paddy was among the contestants sent packing at the end of last night’s episode, failing to receive a rose despite some desperate last minute manoeuvring.
Paddy going home is an example to men who fetishise wlw relationships #BachelorInParadiseAU

Brooke and Alex’s romantic date was well-received by viewers at home, who praised it as a genuinely real moment on a show that has been accused of “queer-baiting” in the past.
Last year, Network 10 was criticised for running promos that implied viewers would witness a same-sex romance between contestants Megan Marx and Elora Murger.
TV ads showed Megan announcing, “She’s absolutely gorgeous … she’s definitely my type of girl,” over footage of her kissing a long-haired brunette.
But in fact it turned out the long-haired brunette was male contestant Thomas Perras, leading viewers to slam the misleading promo.
In contrast, last night Ten pulled no punches in showing viewers the program’s first-ever same-sex date — including a lingering kiss between Alex and Brooke:
