Thrilling moment that proved Pia’s the true winner of Survivor

Pia Miranda copped a nasty insult during last night’s Survivor finale — and her incredibly fierce comeback showed why she truly deserved to win.

Australian Survivor: Pia's epic clapback

One sensational response during last night’s Survivor finale should eradicate any lingering doubt among viewers that Pia Miranda is the true winner of the season.

Pia and fellow top-two finalist Baden Gilbert faced a jury of eliminated contestants during the finale, copping a grilling as their peers demanded to know why they thought they deserved to win.

It was a question from supermodel David Genat, who was ousted from the tribe in a stunning blindside on day 34, that gave Pia a chance to flex her Survivor muscle.

“Sitting here with a jury that probably has some of the biggest challenge and strategic threats in the history of Survivor, personally, I consider you guys ‘goats’. I would like to hear the truth on how think your ‘goat game’ was advantageous to you, and how it got you to the end?”

For the Survivor newbies among us: This is an insult disguised as a question. In Survivor parlance, “goat” doesn’t stand for Greatest of All Time — it’s a disparaging term to indicate a weak player who manages to coast to the end. A Survivor ‘goat’ is kept around because their tribemates believe nobody on the jury will ever think they played the game well enough to deserve the $500,000 prize money.

Pia paused for a second before responding.

“A goat is someone who follows. I definitely didn’t follow people. If you are calling me goat — like, does me blindsiding you not count?” she asked him. And she had a point — Pia was a key player in David’s exit from the game, a blindside so brutal he left with an unused immunity idol in his pocket.

“The girls will back me up: Janine, Abbey and myself were the ones who thought of it back at Contenders camp. When Dave was gunning for Daisy, I told the girls, and I said ‘Let’s not wait to get (Dave) before you got us.’ I worked on Jonno and Harry, and I had a really big hand in voting Dave out. But I had to be careful, because what happens when you are at the forefront of big moves? You get voted out.”

It was then that Pia’s response took the form of some motherly advice to Dave himself, should he ever feel like having another crack at Survivor.

“Dave, you need to know where to sit and how to make big moves without being at the forefront, because this is Australian Survivor, and it’s very different to American Survivor. And in Australia, if we see someone taking control, you’re going to end up sitting on the jury. That’s why you’re there, Dave.”

David’s face said it all:

Hello darkness my old friend …

“What I did not do is sit at the back of an alliance, at the bottom, and not make any decisions. I’m not a goat, I’m a hard-playing Survivor and I deserve to be here,” she said. Thank you, next.

Pia’s response was an instant hit with Survivor fans, one even calling it “the greatest clapback” in the show’s history:

Honestly, they may as well have handed Pia the giant cheque there and then. In tense scenes, Baden then turned on Pia, for some reason questioning her rather than David about the goat accusation: “And you think that I just sat and watched every decision …?”

“I don’t know your game well enough,” she said with a shrug, unbothered.

QUEEN.
