It drew more than two million viewers back in the ‘90s, and now, Gladiators is making a comeback.

The Australian reality TV program, which aired two seasons on Channel 7 in 1995 and was briefly revived in 2008, is slated to hit screens on Channel 10 from 2024.

The original show, based off popular US and UK formats, was hosted by actors Kimberley Joseph and Aaron Pedersen, the latter of whom was replaced by radio host Mike Hammond following the first series.

Stepping into the hosting gig three decades after it first premiered will be retired NRL player Beau Ryan and netball great Liz Ellis, Ten announced on Tuesday.

The premise of the debut series involved resident competitors – the Gladiators – pit against one-time-only Contenders to battle it out in different gruelling events in front of an arena audience.

It looks as though the revived series will follow a similar tried-and-tested format with some newly-created events, with Ten revealing fan-favourite events including Hang Tough, Duel, The Wall, Power Ball, Pyramid and The Eliminator will be included in the line-up of challenges.

Of her hosting role, Ellis said she was “super pumped” about the opportunity.

“It’s an iconic franchise and I’m excited about the reboot. It is set to showcase some of my favourite Gladiator challenges from the original series as well as throw up a few new ones for us to fall in love with,” she said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Ryan said he grew up watching the original series and was honoured to be tapped as co-host.

“I am beyond excited to be hosting Gladiators alongside the great Liz Ellis. Liz is a national treasure, and we are going to have a lot of fun. I grew up watching and loving Gladiators and can’t wait to get into it. It’s going to be spectacular,” he added.

Gladiators is set to begin filming in Sydney next month.

It’s being produced for Network 10 by Warner Bros. International Television Production.
