An Australian boy band blew away the coaches as The Voice returned to screens on Sunday night, with newcomer Jason Derulo declaring they could explode “around the world”.

Sydney pop group Overnight – consisting of school mates Tyler, Harry, Kye, Emerson and Jai – turned all four chairs during their high-energy performance of the Backstreet Boys’ 1999 hit Larger Than Life during the first round of blind auditions.

British singer Rita Ora pressed her button within a second of the five-piece starting the song, and was quickly followed by Jessica Mauboy, Derulo and Guy Sebastian.

Decked out in matching black, white and red plaid outfits, the boys continued to impress the coaches with more than just their voices, pulling off dynamic choreography and engaging with the crowd.

“That was unbelievable,” Derulo said after they’d finished.

“When it started I was like, this sounds like a lot of energy, even before y’all started singing the crowd was buzzing.

“You guys look great, you sound great, and when I turned around y’all was cutting up.

“What is going on here?! Is this a moment where we put an Australian band on the map across the world? Is this what I’m witnessing right here right now? I mean, that was insane.”

Derulo pitched hard for Overnight to join his team, triggering a ‘block’ from Ora, meaning the group weren’t able to choose him even if they wanted to. The coaches are only allowed one block each.

“I put a block out, I don’t know how much more I can show you guys that I want you,” Ora said. “I really believe I’m good at this. I did win last season!”

Mauboy raised her experience being in a pop group (Young Divas) to win the boys over, while Sebastian went with a smoother approach.

“The thing that I loved about you the most was how raw it was,” Sebastian said.

“It feels organic and real. I think it’s about choosing a coach that’s going to help keep that organic nature and friendship, lads hanging out who love music, but polishing it to a place where it’s believable and credible.

“They’re all skills that you need a coach that is quite technical, and that coach... is Guy Sebastian.”

Ultimately, Overnight opted to go with Team Guy, but confessed to their new coach they had initially planned on picking Derulo before the block was enforced.

“He [Sebastian] came in sideways, he waited for us all to say our piece,” Mauboy said to the fellow coaches.

“I’m so mad! I’m absolutely gobsmacked. I thought I had it in the bag,” Ora said.

Derulo added, “They’re going to be tough to beat. I should’ve blocked you [Ora] while you were speaking.”

The Voice continues Monday on Channel 7 at 7.30pm.
