Virginia Trioli explains why she has disappeared from on-air

Virginia Trioli was set to return to radio show this morning, however she took to Twitter to explain why she wasn’t back behind the mic.

ABC’s Virginia Trioli failed to return to the airwaves today after a three-month break.

The host of Mornings on ABC Radio Melbourne was set to return today with her colleague even discussing it as later as Friday.

Her fill-in host Ali Moore said on Friday, “it has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to be with you over the last couple of months. VT will be back here on Monday in this chair.”

However, Trioli didn’t return on Monday and took to Twitter to explain her absence.

“Some personal news: it’s been a long and complex summer of family illness, and my focus needs to be on home for now,” she wrote.

She thanked her ABC colleagues and management for their “kindness and support” and told her listeners she would see them “very soon”.

The Australian’s Media Diaryreported that Trioli’s return date would now likely be pushed back until after Easter.

Before Trioli took a break, she made waves when she sat down with Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews in October 2022.

Andrews appeared on the show to discuss the flood situation that was impacting the state but the chat took a turn when Trioli doggedly requested an interview with Andrews.

She said: “Now look Premier, you’ve requested not to be asked about policy or politics today, you say out of respect to those who are dealing with the floods, but it has been, I just checked, almost a year to the day when you were last in this studio or on this show for an interview,” Trioli said.

“Can you give an assurance to the listeners that you will be back here for a proper in-depth interview within a couple of weeks?” She asked.

Daniels appeared surprised by her request and responded awkwardly. “Um, well I can’t give you a time Virginia but I’m always happy to sit with you. I wish we were talking under much more favourable circumstances,” he said.

“You could if you’d like to,” the radio host shot back.

In December Andrews chose to give his first post-election interview to Trioli’s co-worker Raf Epstein who has the drive spot for ABC.

Trioli has been hosting ABC’s Mornings since 2008.
