Aussie radio presenter Ben “Dobbo” Dobbin has revealed he’s still “shaken up emotionally” during his return to work following a horror cycling accident that left him unsure if he’d walk again.

The Triple M presenter and Channel 9 reporter had swerved to miss a black snake on the road while training for the Noosa Triathlon on September 25 when he clipped the back tyre of his cycling coach Cam Hughes.

The incident took place while the pair were cycling from Nundah to the Hornibrook Bridge, north of Brisbane.

He told the Courier Mail he “knew something was wrong straight away”, and was diagnosed with a fractured C5 vertebrae at Brisbane’s Wesley Hospital.

A doctor had told him “most people who have this type of injury don’t ever walk again”.

However, on Tuesday the radio personality returned to the desk at Triple M.

Speaking on Triple M’s The Rush Hour with Leisel Jones, Liam & Dobbo, Dobbin revealed he had a major blood infection, but returned to work 10 days after his surgery nonetheless.

He said the incident “happened so quickly” and was worse than he initially thought.

“It really has shaken me up emotionally,” Dobbin said on the Tuesday program.

“It happened so quickly, it was unexpected, and it was a lot worse than what I initially thought.”

Dobbin said he became emotional thinking about his children while in the ambulance.

“The big lesson out of it … it’s how life can just take you on a different change so quickly,” he said.

“I was awake the whole time, but when I was in the ambulance, I got really emotional … I started thinking about my kids, like I absolutely need to be up and there for my kids.

“It made me realise that I’m loved, I’m very lucky. I probably put too much effort into my work and don’t focus enough on my family.”

Dobbin also thanked all those who supported him during his recovery.

“The outpouring … the nurses, the ambulance officers, they are unsung heroes,” he said.

“Dr Richard Kahler, who was my neurosurgeon, he is like a king. I’m very lucky.

“I’m thankful to you guys, to Triple M, Channel 9 and Resonate.

“I’m very grateful for all the love I received from listeners, so many people reached out.”
