Triple J breakfast: Matt Okine and Alex Dyson to leave the show at the end of the year
THE popular hosts of the breakfast show have announced that they’re leaving radio at the end of the year.
MATT Okine and Alex Dyson are walking away from Triple J breakfast at the end of the year.
The boys were close to tears as they made the announcement on air this morning.
“You and I met each other and did two practices and it really worked and we’ve been doing it for three years and I’d consider you one of my best friends,” Dyson said to Okine at the beginning of the break.
“I don’t think people realise how much we didn’t know each other before we started working together on the radio,” Okine said.
“It’s genuinely quite miraculous that we were able to do the show as well as we have over the last few years.”
An emotional Dyson relived some of his highlights from his time on air, saying: “It’s really cool meeting people like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Julia Gillard, Dave Grohl or Kirsten Wiig but nothing is cooler than being at Splendour in the Grass and having an ER nurse come up to you and say, ‘You make a tough job easier.’”
Okine, who joined Dyson on the radio show in 2014 after Tom Ballard left, plans to continue doing stand-up comedy and will also pursue an acting career.
“Before radio I actually studied an acting degree, so I figured I’d wait until my looks and hair had completely deteriorated before moving to the small screen,” Okine said in a statement.
Dyson, who has been with Triple J for 10 years, has plans to travel.
“After spending over a third of my life at Triple J, I felt it was time to give someone else a go while I travel the world, do a bit of writing and wean myself off my addiction to new Australian music,” Dyson said in a statement.
The final Matt and Alex show will air on Wednesday, December 12. Their replacements haven’t yet been announced.
