Triple J announced the decision at the start of the Hottest 100 broadcast and by posting a parody Buzzfeed article on Twitter: “8 Hilarious But Totally True Reasons You Won’t Hear ‘Shake It Off” In The Hottest 100”. The triplejfeed.com site crashed as soon as the countdown started.
The article states that “it became pretty clear, pretty quick that a lot of people just wanted to prod some ‘hipsters’ for the lulz” by voting for the pop star.
The radio station was also conscious of allowing the Taylor Swift entry this year, only to open the floodgates for trolls every year after that, with entries for the likes of Rebecca Black and Paris Hilton. The Triple J Hottest 100 is a launch pad for up and coming artists, and the station said if they missed out on a place because of a Taylor Swift internet campaign then that would be a “travesty”.

If the Taylor Swift song was eligible, it would have made it to No. 12 on the countdown. It’s a bitter victory for the #tay4hottest100 campaign, started by Buzzfeed, which Triple J notes is an “international media company worth approximately $850 million”.
“Whilst their advertisers enjoyed the sweet page views, it’s not legit for other media to try and troll the poll,” it said.
So for those dying to see the pop tart take over the land of the hipsters in the most obvious way possible, you have been disappointed. But fear not, if you desperately want to hear the sweet sounds of Shake It Off just one more time (and we know you do) you can listen to it below.
On its parody Buzzfeed page, Triple J explains in a tongue in cheek manner, the various reasons it shook Swift off from the countdown, in eight points.
It cites a number of side-effects from the campaign, including an app created to spam votes for Swift which may incite “internet chuckleheads” to try and sabotage the countdown in the future.
The station took exception to Buzzfeed campaign’s aim to “teach those music snobs a lesson” by getting Swift to infiltrate the poll — to which they replied “nope.”
“(Buzzfeed’s) #tay4hottest100 campaign bought Tay a one-way ticket to Bansville” the site says.
Triple J said “the Hottest 100 has a low tolerance for trolls as it does for non heirloom carrots”.
This year more than two million votes were received for the Hottest 100.

The station also cited the KFC campaign last week where the fast food chain offered a voucher for people who listed their favourite Swift song, and used the #tay4hottest100 hashtag.
“The Hottest 100’s an opportunity for individuals everywhere to cast their votes for their legit favourite songs of the year. The invitation doesn’t extend to Fried Chicken companies eager to wrap their greasy fingers around a freshly-minted hashtag ... we’d prefer if people voted for the love of music, not the love of cholesterol.”
It points out that Adelaide’s Tkay Maidza made it to No. 100 on today’s poll, and would have been 101 if Swift was included. “Imagine if that didn’t happen because a joke Buzzfeed campaign got a song Triple J never played onto the list instead.”
However the station says it has no problem with Swift.
``She’s smart, she’s cool, she’s successful and she has great taste in BFFs. Shake It Off shows she hates trolls too, so we have that in common.”

It notes Shake It Off was played 13,511 times on other Australian radio stations last year, and zero times on Triple J.
Of Madonna and Alanis Morissette making Hottest 100 countdowns in the `90s they simply note “it was a different time”.
The site ends with ``We had a heap of fun. We hope team #tay4hottest100 enjoyed hearing the 100 sweet tunes that did make it.”
Reaction to the decision was mixed with some shrugging it off, others celebrating while many railed at the injustice of it all.
