Ray Hadley slams ‘blockhead’ Sunrise host Matt Doran over Adele interview

Channel 7 reporter Matt Doran’s Adele interview fiasco has copped the wrath of Ray Hadley, who urged people “don’t feel sorry for him”.

Matt Doran apologises for Adele slip-up that cost Channel 7 $1 million

Matt Doran’s Adele interview drama has divided opinion, with Australia’s leading radio stars taking vastly different stances.

The Channel 7 reporter has found himself at the centre of an international media storm after a report emerged in The Daily Telegraph that he offended the British singer during an exclusive interview filmed in London earlier this month, in which he openly told her he hadn’t listened to her new album, 30.

The interview reportedly cost the Seven Network $1 million in a deal brokered with Sony, with the record label ultimately blocking Seven from airing any footage from Doran’s 30-minute sit-down.

During a chat with 2GB host Ben Fordham, contributor Ray Hadley dubbed Doran a “blockhead” for not doing his research.

Fordham on the other hand disagreed, saying he “felt sorry” for Doran, who had earlier admitted to The Australian he missed an email with a link to listen to her album.

“I feel sorry for him because he is a very smart bloke, he is a very decent person and all he saw in his inbox was an e-copy to Adele and he thought it was some sort of card,” Fordham said.

Hadley replied: “If you are going to interview Adele and she has got an album for the first time in a number of years … Don’t feel sorry for him. He is a blockhead.

“You and I differ on many things in relation to people who are blockheads. I am telling you, he is a blockhead.”

Over on KIIS FM, co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson was at odds with her host, shock jock Kyle Sandilands.

Sandilands was firmly in Doran’s corner, saying: “Why is everyone up in arms over this poor bastard? He’s the Weekend Sunrise guy. He’s not the normal go-to celebrity interviewer … He looks like a nice fella too,” Sandilands said.

“This is where record companies go wrong, they want the interviewers to ask all these detailed questions about the record that no one has ever heard. It’s dumb … No one likes those interviews.”

Jackie argued: “I don’t believe they’re expecting the whole interview to be about the record but to have no questions [about it]? The record company would have flown him over, they would’ve paid for it, so I think the least he could do is ask a couple of questions about the reason you’re over there. I think it’s courteous Kyle.”

Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O also found themselves disagreeing.

Doran last night defended himself in an interview with The Australian, claiming it was an unfortunate mistake, rather than arrogance, that meant he didn’t listen to Adele’s new music before the interview.

He said he had been sent an e-copy of the new album but “somehow missed” it while flying to London. He called it “the most important email I have ever missed,” and said he was “mortified and unequivocally apologetic.”

“When I sat down to interview Adele, I was totally unaware that I’d been emailed a preview of her unreleased album,” Doran said.

He also refuted reports he was suspended by Seven over the incident, telling The Australian’s Nick Tabakoff he was never “formally” suspended despite being off the air for one weekend.
