Radio stars reveal their radio crushes

JUST because they have their own radio program doesn’t mean they’re not fans of shows from other networks. So who do Kyle, Jackie O and others have a radio crush on?

IF YOU’RE a radio listener, chances are you’ve got a favourite show that you always listen to on the dial.

And the radio stars themselves are exactly the same. So which shows or personalities are popular broadcasters like Kyle and Jackie O and Kate Ritchie a huge fan of? News.com.au found out:

Kate Ritchie from Nova’s Kate, Tim and Marty:

“I’m not really a radio listener. But I do love Jonesy and Amanda because for my husband’s 30th birthday I organised for them to call him and do let him do the quiz in the morning and he won a blower for the backyard. The yard looks fantastic, so thanks to them.”

Kyle Sandilands from KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O show:

“I don’t really listen to anyone else to tell you the truth. I have heard Hughesy and Kate and I think they’re excellent. I even thought they were good on Nova ... silly Nova to let them go. I also like the drive show on Nova, whatever their names are.” (FYI Kyle, it’s Kate, Tim and Marty).

Jackie O KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O show:

“Hughesy and Kate. I just love those guy together. Even before they joined KIIS I was a big fan of theirs and I used to podcast them all the time. I love their chemistry and I find them easy to listen to.”

Dave Thornton from Hit 101.9 Fox FM’s Fifi and Dave:

“Contractually speaking I think I’d better say Hamish and Andy. But seriously, I do love that they keep the studio clean so that when I get in in the morning it looks good.”

Kate Langbroek from KIIS FM’s Hughesy and Kate:

“To be honest I don’t really listen to the radio ... But I’m a massive fan of us to be honest. You can’t always say that, but at the moment I just think we’re not like anyone else.”

Dan Debuf from Hit 104.1 2Day FM’s Dan and Maz:

“Eddie McGuire and Mick Molloy from Triple M Melbourne. I remember when I first started with Southern Cross Austereo and Eddie was on stage hosting a launch event and Mick was at the bar just heckling him and I was like, ‘Man, that’s epic.’”

Emma Freedman from the Today Network’s The Scoopla Show:

”The show I enjoy is Triple J’s breakfast show with Matt and Alex. I think they’re both really sharp-witted and I like their ‘young and loose’ but very astute vibe.”

Wippa from Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa:

“I’m a massive Kate Ritchie fan. I don’t know of another announcer who has such an impact with so little words. It’s like a mad zoo on that show and when Kate talks, it’s like the zoo keeper coming in and saying, ‘settle down.’”

Amanda Keller from WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda:

“I’m gonna go on the ABC dial and I’m going to say Richard Fidler. His conversation hour is my favourite show. I podcast it when I can’t hear it and it’s just the best radio.”

Tim Blackwell from Nova’s Kate, Tim and Marty:

“Ross and John from 3AW Melbourne. They just do radio completely as everybody is not taught. They run their own race. They’re intelligent. They talk about things they shouldn’t talk about and I get inspired by them everyday.”

Ben Fordham from 2GB:

“I love Fitzy and Wippa. I mean, I’m contractually obliged to say that because we work in the same building and they’re mates of mine. But as far as AM radio goes, I look up the likes of Alan Jones and Ray Hadley and Neil Mitchell. And to be honest I don’t mind a bit of Kyle and Jackie O. I’m a big flicker of the radio dial so I tend to give everyone a go.”

Brendan Jones from WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda:

“Hamish and Andy. I just love those guys. I wish I was both Hamish and Andy. I think they’re like us, except Amanda Keller’s a bit more masculine than Hamish.”

Marty Sheargold from Nova’s Kate, Tim and Marty:

“You know who I love? Richard Stubbs from 774 in Melbourne. Just opens the phones and has adult conversations with adult listeners and it’s just good talkback radio.”

Angus O’Loughlin from the Today Network’s Shazam Top 20:

“Probably Kyle Sandilands. He’s one of the nicest guys I’ve ever worked with. Seriously. I used to have this sh*tty night show and he did the breakfast show and I said to him one time, ‘Can I do a segment with you called A Conversation with Kyle?’ It was themed around us wearing robes and being by a crackling fire with whiskey glasses, and he loved it and gave me 10 minutes every two weeks. Kyle was everything that I’d hoped he’d be.”

Jules Lund from the Today Network’s The Scoopla Show:

“I love Marty Sheargold’s dry sense of humour. He makes me giggle because he’s so wrong and bold.”

Fitzy from Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa:

“Kate, Tim and Marty. You know why? Because in a way we wish that our show could be like that and we could get away with some of the stuff they do.”

Charli Robinson from Sea FM’s Galey, Ross and Charli:

“Hamish and Andy. Their intelligent humour wins hands down. When you meet some well-known people they can sometimes fall off their pedestal, but with Hamish and Andy, you feel like you could go and have a beer with them straight away.”
