Radio stars mock Kyle Sandilands at annual Australian radio awards
THE comedians hosting the Commercial Radio Awards in Melbourne went to town on Kyle Sandilands after he pulled out of the event at last minute.
KYLE Sandilands pulled out of the Australian Commercial Radio Awards at the last minute and as a result he was mocked mercilessly during the ceremony in Melbourne.
To make matters worse, Sandilands and his KIIS FM partner in crime, Jackie O, weren’t there to accept their award for Best On Air Team.
Hosting for the third year in a row, Chaser comedians Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen announced on stage at the start of the show that Sandilands wasn’t coming and poked fun at the number of sick days the radio star takes.
“Kyle Sandilands was supposed to be with us tonight … but he literally advised us around lunchtime that he wasn’t coming,” Taylor said. “So I guess Kyle treats the ACRAs a bit like he treats his own show, he never really feels all that obliged to show up.”
Hansen continued, “It’s been a very busy year for Kyle – not just on radio, but also on TV with his Channel 10 pilot Trial by Kyle … a show where the rhyme in the title was the most creatively ambitious thing in it”.
“So Kyle’s not here,” Taylor said. “ Which is great news for the rest of us ... and the even better news is that Alan Jones isn’t here!”
The Chaser duo also joked about the 2Day FM breakfast show which has had a different line-up every year since 2014.
“It’s great to be back hosting for the third year in a row,” Taylor said. “We know the very thought of the same team doing the same job for three years in a row just blew the minds of anyone who’s ever worked on 2Day FM Breakfast… which is probably about half the room.
“Elsewhere this year, Triple J made waves by moving the date of the Hottest 100 away from Australia Day,” Taylor said. “Then Triple M saw a gap in the Australia Day market and counter-programmed a countdown of Australia’s Most Culturally-Insensitive Beer-Drinking Songs … pretty much all of them by Shannon Noll.”
Most of Australia’s biggest radio stars, including Mick Molloy, Jane Kennedy, Dave Hughes, Kate Langbroek, Amanda Keller, Carrie Bickmore, Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell, Marty Sheargold, Grant Denyer, Ed Kavalee were all at the ACRAs in Melbourne.
The big award at the event is the ACRA for Best On Air Team. Nova’s Kate, Tim and Marty won it in 2016 and 2017, but this year they were pipped at the post by KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O.
