Radio hosts apologise for ‘fat-shaming’ Kelly Clarkson
TWO radio hosts have issued public apologies to Kelly Clarkson after they poked fun at her weight.
TWO radio hosts have apologised to Kelly Clarkson for poking fun at her weight.
On US radio program The Mike Gallagher Show, the host said on Friday, “Have you seen Kelly Clarkson? ... Holy cow, did she blow up”.
Fox anchor Chris Wallace, who was a guest on the radio show, responded with, “She could stay off the deep dish pizza for a little while”.
The comments didn’t amuse many listeners, including fellow Fox news host Greta Van Susteren, who used her blog to urge her colleague to say sorry.
“This ‘guy snickering’ about her weight is obnoxious.,” wrote Van Susteren, “He should (Chris Wallace) apologise”.
And Wallace listened.
In a statement, he said: “I sincerely apologise to Kelly Clarkson for my offensive comment. I admire her remarkable talent and that should have been the focus of any discussion about her.”
Radio host Mike Gallagher also offered a public apology, writing on his website: “I couldn’t possibly feel any worse than I do for making an observation that led to the conclusion that I ‘fat-shamed’ this talented and classy entertainer. It was a really stupid thing for me to do.”
Just last week the American Idol winner, who gave birth to her first baby nine months ago, sat down with Ellen and spoke about the criticism she receives over her weight.
“It’s like, you’re just who you are,” the 32-year-old said to Ellen.
“We are who we are. Whatever size, and it doesn’t meant that we’re gonna be that forever.
“Sometimes we’re more fit. Like especially me, I’m such a creative person that I yoyo. So sometimes I’m more fit and I get into kickboxing hardcore. And then sometimes I don’t, and I’m like … I’d rather have wine.”
