Radio host Erin Molan has been gifted a bizarre birthday present from a national politician after interviewing him on her show.

The journalist shared a picture of the surprise delivery on Wednesday, which marked her 39th birthday.

She looks amused as she holds up a cupcake decorated with the instantly recognisable photo of Opposition Leader Peter Dutton eating a dagwood dog.

Taken at Queensland’s Ekka show earlier this month, the photos gained national attention for the suggestive angle of consumption. Mr Dutton said afterwards that there was “no good angle” for chomping down on a dagwood dog.

The Nationals leader appeared on the 2Day FM breakfast radio show Hughesy, Ed and Erin to discuss the headline-grabbing pictures last week, but he clearly thought there was more fun to be had.

Ms Molan looks amused as she holds up the cupcakes emblazoned with the hilarious photo of Mr Dutton, who is a close friend of her father senator Jim Molan.

The Opposition Leader showed how well he knew Ms Molan in a personal voice message wishing her a happy birthday, which the radio host played on her morning show.

“There is one thing that I wanted you to clear up, maybe on your birthday,” he said.

“It happened back in 2000 when you were 16 and living in Brisbane, and there was a case at the time of a 16-year-old running around with an ID stolen from her older sister being passed around with her friends to get into nightclubs illegally.”

Mr Dutton said he knew Ms Molan’s parents were approached by police at the time of the incident, which is apparently still “an open case”.

“I know you are deeply embarrassed,” he said.

“If there is anything you can tell us … about your activities, I think everybody would be happy to hear it.”

The radio host was shocked he knew so much about her teenage shenanigans but owned up to her actions.

“OK, it was me. I was young,” she explained on air.

“I am going to kill mum and dad (for sharing those details).”

Ms Molan said she fervently hoped the police weren’t wasting precious resources on investigating her wild youth.
