Radio giant issued grovelling apology over host’s C-bomb insult to Scott Morrison
A radio host’s C-bomb stunt involving a clueless Scott Morrison is being investigated by his furious employer, who offered an apology to the PM.
It seems the regional radio host responsible for taking an explicit dig at the prime minister is no longer laughing over the stunt.
Shad Wicker, co-host of the breakfast show on Hit Far North Queensland in Cairns, posed for a picture with Scott Morrison on Wednesday after an on-air interview.
In it, the shock jock was holding a mug with the word c*** printed on the outside — unbeknown to Mr Morrison, who shared the photograph on his Instagram account.
Now, radio giant Southern Cross Australia, which owns the regional station, has issued a grovelling apology and vowed to investigate the matter.
“This conduct is not acceptable and does not live up to the social and moral code of conduct that we endorse and expect from all our people,” a spokesperson for the company said.
“Southern Cross Austereo sincerely apologises for the actions of Shad Wicker, host of (the) Cairns Hit FM breakfast show.”
Coincidentally, Mr Wicker marked his final day on air yesterday, farewelling long-time listeners as he moves to Gosford in New South Wales for a new job.
But the fallout from the stunt is likely to follow him, given his new station — 2GO and Triple M — is also part of the Austereo network.
“As a result (of the incident), we are currently investigating this matter and will take appropriate action in the coming days.”
On Wednesday, social media users noticed the carefully placed mug in the PM’s selfie and began sharing it.
Mr Morrison’s office clearly noticed, promptly removing the image from his Instagram stories feed.
But Mr Wicker continued the gag on his own profiles, proudly posting an image of the cup in question, although it has since been deleted.
On their own, the letters U, N and T painted on the outside of the mug are meaningless, but the painted handle preceding them, in the shape of C, makes the message fairly clear.
Mr Wicker did not elaborate on his motive when contacted by news.com.au. The PM’s office also declined to comment.
It’s not been the easiest of weeks for Mr Morrison, who faces growing backlash over his ‘captain’s pick’ saw an endorsed Liberal candidate dumped in the seat of Gilmore to make way for former Labor president Warren Mundine.
