An Adelaide radio star and former Crows player has unleashed on Aussies as “lazy pieces of s**t” in a stunning on-air outburst.

Stephen Rowe, who co-hosts the 4pm to 7pm weekday sport show on Nova’s FIVEAA, went on the wild and seemingly unprompted rant during his regular preview slot on Stacey Lee’s afternoon show this week, the Adelaide Advertiser reported.

The former AFL star turned outspoken radio commentator also suggested Australians had “better morals” in the World War I era and suggested the need to “self govern”, referencing iconic colonial outlaw Ned Kelly.

His rant began with comments about South Australia’s new mobile phone detection cameras that officially switched on this week, with Rowe claiming the motivation was purely “revenue raising” rather than safety and that “we’re just over-governed”.

Asked by Lee whether he was concerned about a driver on their phone crashing into him, Rowe said he would just “sue them … I don’t know” before launching into a tangent that “we’re breeding a weaker race”.

“We’ve got to be governed and fined and sanctioned and policed to just be a proper human, to just live a good life,” he said.

“We never had all of this back in the ‘30s, ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s, and I tell you what, no one would’ve stepped out of line then because you had respect for your elders, you had respect for your headmaster or your schoolteacher.”

He then suggested Australians needed to “self-govern”.

“In the bow-and-arrow days we had the horse and cart … a bit like Ned Kelly, we shot him, we hung him, you know what I mean?” Rowe said.

“It’s gotta be up to me and up to my family and how I bring them up, and how I instil principles and how I instil work ethic, and how I instil ‘work hard and do the right thing’, if we all did that we wouldn’t need phones and cameras.

“Do you think there would’ve been less crime in the, I don’t know, let’s go back to the World War I era. Do you think we were better people then? Do you think we were more family-orientated, had better principles and better morals?”

Rowe, who also manages a family-owned business, then lablled Australians “lazy pieces of s**t at the moment”.

“They’re either lazy, have got issues or are on drugs,” he said. “Try and employ an Australian at the moment.”

Lee asked why he didn’t save his rant for his own show. “I don’t want to get in trouble,” she said.
