Kyle Sandilands reveals why he fell out with David Campbell
KYLE Sandilands has made no secret of the fact he doesn’t like David Campbell. Now he’s revealed why the pair fell out.
KYLE Sandilands has finally explained his beef with David Campbell.
Listeners of his KIIS 106.5 breakfast show will no doubt be aware that Sandilands isn’t a fan of the Today Extra co-host as he regularly takes pot shots at Campbell.
But Sandilands hasn’t fully explained why. Until now.
Speaking exclusively to news.com.au, the radio star claimed he used to consider Campbell a mate until he “jumped on the bandwagon” and turned on the shock jock.
“That c**k breath, I can’t stand him,” Sandilands said when asked about the singer/TV host/actor.
“David Campbell I’ve known for a long time. Good guy, nice guy. I wasn’t hanging out of his pocket but I’d see him and bring him onto our show all the time.”
Even when Campbell joined rival radio station Nova, Sandilands said that he continued to support the fellow entertainer’s career.
“He brought a song out and our station wasn’t going to play it and I said, ‘I don’t think that’s fair. Just because he’s on another station doesn’t mean we should ban him. I just think the right thing to do is just play it.’
“I thought I’d stretched the friendship for him, you know, even though he was on an opposition network.”
But Sandilands told news.com.au the friendship soured when Campbell criticised him in the media.
“As soon as he had a chance to have a little whinge during one of my many f**k-ups of life, he was one of the ones to first sink the boot in as many people did,” the radio host said.
“And I thought, f**k you dog! I’ve done the right thing by you the whole time and he just jumped on the bandwagon. He’s just a peasant. Now he’s no friend of mine.”
Sandilands and Campbell haven’t had a proper conversation in years but the KIIS FM host has come to face-to-face with the Channel Nine star a few times since at media film screenings.
“If that little slender David Campbell walks in, in his Roger David suit and sees me, he just does a little pirouette and out the door,” Sandilands claimed.
Despite laying into Campbell, who is regarded by many as one of the nicest guys in showbiz, Sandilands says he doesn’t consider himself to be feuding with the star.
“Are there any current feuds? I can’t think of any,” he said.
“I don’t start the feuds. They always start it. I always just retaliate. I’m not out there looking for feuds but if some c**k mouths off, they’ll know about it.”
In the past he’s been in feuds with comedian Dave Hughes and Rove McManus, both of which Sandilands says he won.
“Everyone’s failed that’s come up against me,” the KIIS FM star said.
During the interview with news.com.au, Sandilands also touched on his infamous on-air clash with Ernie Dingo.
The radio star described the 2008 exchange as “the worst” celebrity interview he’s ever had.
“I’ve always loved Ernie Dingo,” Sandilands said.
“He was on the phone and he was off me big time. Just hated me ... He was so dismissive and rude and arrogant.”
In the fiery interview, Dingo was upset that a promo had aired earlier on the breakfast show that mentioned his name and the line “a dingo took my baby”.
“That’s character assassination as far as I’m concerned towards me,” Dingo told Sandilands in the interview, even though the radio announcer had nothing to do with the promo.
“Your game is to sensationalise things and you’re just basically a commercial wanker,” Dingo said on-air.
Speaking about the incident to news.com.au, Sandilands said, “I was giving him a million opportunities to get it [the interview] back on track and then I just told him he was a f**kwit and told him to f**k off.”
