Kyle Sandilands apologises again for ‘disgusting’ Virgin Mary comments
Kyle Sandilands has apologised again for offensive comments he made about the Virgin Mary, amid calls for him to be removed from air.
Kyle Sandilands has apologised again for offensive comments he made about the Virgin Mary, saying the remarks were meant to be a “joke”.
There have been calls for the controversial radio host to be sacked after called the Virgin Mary a liar during The Kyle and Jackie O Show last Thursday.
A video of the remarks was posted on the KIIS FM Instagram account and in it Sandilands claimed the Virgin Mary was probably impregnated “behind the camel shed”.
“I thought Mary was his (Jesus’) girlfriend but apparently it was the mother,” he said.
“And the mother lied obviously and told everyone, ‘Nah I got pregnant by a magical ghost’. Bulls**t.”
He then called anyone who believed in the Bible story “dumb”.
“You might believe everything that was written down 2000 years ago to be absolutely accurate. Good on you, you’re dumb. Dumb as dog sh*t,” he said
His comments sparked widespread outrage from Christian and Muslim groups and he issued an apology the following day and the video was promptly removed from social media.
Sandilands has now spoken out about the incident again, after being confronted by photographers outside his rented mansion in LA, where he is currently staying.
One of the photographers asked if he “regretted” the comments he made, to which he replied “of course”.
“Sometimes you say some things as a joke, and it offends some people and you don’t realise until you offend someone. You hear about it, and you think, ‘Oh f**k, that’s pretty sh*t,” he said.
“When you’re a comedian you say funny things and you think you’re funny, but then you don’t realise you piss some people off.
“I already put a statement out saying I never meant to piss anyone off, I never meant to hurt anyone. I’m here to make people laugh, not to make them angry.”
Sandilands is spending time in LA during his week off, which most breakfast show hosts in the radio industry receive during the non-ratings period.
Despite not being in the country, the radio host has been constantly dealing with the fallout from his comments.
He has reportedly been receiving death threats and had to hire security to watch over his house in Sydney, according to the Daily Mail.
Protesters gathered outside KIIS FM’s Sydney studios on Monday, calling for Sandilands to be fired.
Protest leader Georgie Clark questioned why former rugby star Israel Folau was sacked for his offensive comments but the radio host was going unpunished.
“He discriminated and said things from his own heart. He called us dumb, he called us stupid, he called Muslims and Christians who believe in the Virgin Mary liars,” Mr Clark said.
“What is the difference between offending a homosexual or a thief or a liar or an adulterator like Israel Folau did. But when it comes to religion, they just want to sweep us under the carpet.”
Folau was sacked in April this year for sharing a photo on his Instagram page that said: “Hell awaits drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists, idolaters.”
He has launched a multimillion-dollar unfair dismissal case against his former employer Rugby Australia that will go to trial in February next year.
Sydney man Charlie Bakhos, who manages the Christian Lives Matter group on Facebook, posted a video from Lebanon condemning Sandilands for his comments.
“You offended Christians, Muslims, people of faith. You called the mother of our lord, Jesus Christ, names. You accused her of having sex,” he said.
“You offended many, many people today, and we’re not going to let this go.”
Many social media users agreed, calling Sandilands’ comments “disgusting” and “disgraceful”.
