Today host Karl Stefanovic has taken a cheeky dig at Michael Clarke days after footage of his altercation with girlfriend Jade Yarbrough went viral.
Mobile phone video captured the former Australian cricket captain, 41, arguing with his partner in a park in Noosa, as she accused him of cheating on her with his ex Pip Edwards.
Karl Stefanovic, who is married to Ms Yarbrough’s sister Jasmine, was also in the park, with Clarke captured on the video yelling out at “Karlos”.
In the footage, which emerged on Wednesday, Clarke can be seen limping after he injured his hamstring in the scuffle.
Stefanovic has yet to make a public statement about the incident, but appeared ready to make jokes about the scandal when he appeared on the Today show on Monday morning, repeatedly dropping comments about his “hammie”.
“You can just pull a hammy by sitting down. Hot cream, please,” he said as he leant over the desk and clutched the back of his leg.
Co-host Sarah Abo joined in, saying she didn’t know how he had sustained the injury.
“He was just sitting there and now he’s standing up complaining about a hamstring injury,” she said.
But the jabs didn’t end there.
Later on in the show, while reporting on Novak Djokovic’s hamstring injury, which he sustained in the Australian Open, sports presenter Alex Cullen made another dig.
“All of this talk about Novak’s hamstring has made me really want to stretch mine,” he said.
“I fear I won’t be able to get out of this position with my very tight pants. Very tight pants.”
He then claimed to be stuck in the stretching position.
“It is all about the deep heat. I have seen that kind of injury before,” Stefanovic replied before turning to weather reporter Tim Davies.
“Karlos, it is all about pulling your hammy at the moment. It is very on trend these days,” Davies said.
The ongoing jabs come as Clarke, the former Australian cricket captain, reappeared on air for the first time since footage of the fight emerged involving his partner Jade Yarbrough and Stefanovic, whose partner is Jade’s sister, Jasmine.
Clarke his hosting gig on Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast program on Monday morning, following the end of his annual leave.
He joined Gerard Middleton, Laurie Daley and Jaimee Rogers for the radio show, and discussed American sport and cricket with his co-hosts as he slotted back into his role.
While he remained tight-lipped on the incident, Middleton did mention the “enormous fascination into Clarkey’s life”.
“It is a private matter that Clarkey’s obviously been dealing with, a very, very private matter which unfortunately was made public,” he said.
“There’s a lot of factors in play here and Clarkey’s made his statement last week and due to all the factors in play we are moving forward on The Big Sports Breakfast this morning.”
Clarke’s hamstring injury he sustained during the ordeal was mentioned though, with Middleton calling his bruise “incredible”.
“You won’t be able to walk properly for weeks.”
Clarke dismissed the comment before turning the topic to cricket.
“Nah it’s fine buddy, it’s on the mend, I’m good to go, I’m ready, game day, good to go, on the mend,” Clarke said.
The 41-year-old had faced the loss of lucrative broadcast contracts and sponsorship deals after the video of the fracas on January 10 emerged, with a six-figure commentary gig in India for Australia’s upcoming Test tour still in doubt.
In the video taken at Noosa’s Lions Park, his partner Jade Yarbrough could be heard accusing Clarke of cheating on her with ex-girlfriend Pip Edwards, before he was slapped across the face.
Clarke, who appeared to tear a hamstring during the scuffle, told The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday night that he was disappointed by his behaviour.
“I accept full responsibility for this altercation and am shattered by my actions,” he said.
Clarke and Yarbrough were fined for public nuisance by Queensland Police after officers investigated the footage.
“No other offences were detected during the investigation,” a police statement said.
“There is no further information available, and the investigation has been finalised.”
