Jackie ‘O’ breaks down as Kyle Sandilands talks about domestic violence past

Jackie ‘O’ Henderson has shed some tears on air while listening to co-host Kyle Sandilands share his experience with domestic violence as a child.

As Johnny O’Keefe’s 1964 hit She Wears My Ring played out in the background of The Kyle & Jackie O Show, Sandilands’ memory took him back to his childhood when he grew up in an abusive household at the hands of his father.

He recalled a particular moment he watched his dad being dragged away by police after an incident at the family home.

“It’s sad. I thought if I ever did my life story, it would start with this song and full on domestic violence with two little children playing with a train set pretending that nothing was wrong,” the 52-year-old told listeners this morning.

“I’ve got shocking memories, like horrible memories. And then the police would show up and dad would get carted away,” he recalled, as a photo montage of throwback pics flashed on screen.

Henderson couldn’t help but cry for her co-host and good friend, so he tried to lighten the mood.

“But don’t feel sorry for me. We’ve got Taylor Swift tickets to give away later,” said Sandilands, who didn’t shed one tear during the segment.

The radio host and his father continued to have a strained relationship as the years went on, with Sandilands purposely freezing out his dad as he took his mum’s side.

Back in February, when discussing family estrangement with a caller, Sandilands said he regretted not forgiving his dad and felt extreme guilt when he passed away from cancer in 2016.

“I took my mum’s side and I tortured my dad for years,” the shock jock said on air. “When he came back around, I made it as difficult as possible for him.

“I actually got off on how sad he was,” he admitted.

“When he got cancer and died, I regretted not being more open to him. I regretted it, and I thought, ‘What a waste of time that was, now that he’s gone.’”

Henderson explained that although the relationship was complicated, father and son were getting along in the lead up to his death, but it was just to late.

“You really did make amends though [before he died],” she said on air at the time.

Sandilands replied: “I know, I know, but my brother regretted it too, we both regretted it. Even just a few days ago we had a quick chat about it and we were like, ‘What idiots we were, what a waste of time.’”
