THEY sailed to Tasmania in a tall ship, created their own flavour of must have chips and somehow, they even revived the career of Sylvester Stallone’s muso brother ... Yep, Hamish and Andy have achieved some remarkable things on the radio.

Between 2006 and 2010, the Hamish and Andy show (4-6pm weekdays) became the highest rating radio series in Australian history.

After a few years focusing on TV projects, the duo are set to return to the radio drive slot (4-6pm) that they dominated so convincingly, with their first show to air on July 13 on Today’s Hit Network.

Before their big comeback, Zach Mander has complied a list of Hamish and Andy’s 10 best radio moments for onnair.com:

10 — FRED BASSET

September 2006: Hamish used the money he won betting on Andy to win Cleo Bachelor of the Year to buy a greyhound, which listeners named Fred Basset.

This was to be the first of many ‘we bought something crazy’ storylines on the show.

All prize moneys won by the Fred Basset were donated to the Greyhound Adoption Program.

9 — FREE EATING

July 2009: Some of Hamish and Andy’s best stuff was in conjunction with Rove’s Channel 10 TV show. Free Eating being a good example. The guys spent a week eating only food they could get for free. The video of Hamish eating chips he found at the football still makes me gag.

8 — TALL SHIP ADVENTURE

March 2009: To celebrate their radio show being broadcast in Tasmania for the first time, the guys sailed across the Bass Strait in a 200-year-old tall ship named ‘Taully Shore’.

This adventure still holds the record for the most sea sickness ever broadcast on radio ... probably.

7 — BRENT THE MIXMASTER

2013: Brent the Mixmaster became a regular on the Hamish and Andy Show.

His talent ... He could turn ordinary foods, into extraordinary foods by mixing different things together. His creations included — Drink X, Sauce X, and Parma X.

Even then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd came onto the show in an attempt to impress the Mixmaster.

6 — FRANK STALLONE

August 2010: Hamish and Andy coined the term, ‘The Frank Effect,’ which is best described as the feeling one gets after listening to Frank Stallone’s 1983 song, Far from Over.

Websites were made, half leather jackets were worn, and eventually Frank Stallone himself was brought to Australia for a concert where he played to thousands of screaming listeners.

Frank is still probably confused by his Australian following.

5. CONJOINED TWINS

2007: Hamish and Andy were literally joined at the hip for a week after they offended a listener while they talking about conjoined twins.

Unfortunately the radio boss’ still had to pay them two wages for the week.

Shame.

4 — PEOPLE’S ISLAND

2014: On Hamish and Andy’s Happy Hour, which aired from 3-4pm on weekdays, the boys once again decided to buy something crazy. This time it was ‘The People’s Island’: a small island off Rockhampton in Queensland.

3 — CARAVAN OF COURAGE

2007 — 2010: An idea that started out as a caravan trip to ‘hug’ Australia ended up taking the guys around the world. After driving both across Australian, and then from the top to the bottom of Australia, Hamish and Andy later tackled caravan trips across the US and from Great Britain and Ireland. This clip of the duo singing a song about Goulburn, while sitting outside a caravan, in a local camping ground, is pretty much everything I love about radio.

2 — GHOSTING

One of the show’s most successful inventions, Ghosting, is a sport where you have to walk as closely as possible behind another person. for as long as possible, without them realising you’re there. What started as a segment on Rove’s TV show took the guys around the world. The boys demonstrated their new sport on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in the US and the Graham Norton Show in the UK.

1 — GRAVY CHIP

2008: Hamish and Andy held a competition to invent a new flavour of chips.

The result ... the Gravy chip.

It was so successful that the limited edition packets sold out across Australia, with thousands of people queuing across the country to get their hands on some.
