Fresh bullying claims emerge against 2GB shock jock Ray Hadley

Embattled radio host Ray Hadley is facing fresh bullying allegations with former staff members saying he had a “ferocious rage” and “thrived on intimidation”.

How to cope with a workplace bully

Fresh bullying allegations have emerged concerning embattled Sydney shock jock Ray Hadley.

The 2GB radio host, who has featured Prime Minister Scott Morrison and former PM Tony Abbott regularly on his show, was already under fire after former staff member Chris Bowen accused him of “vile and inexcusable behaviour”.

Mr Bowen said Hadley’s fury was one of the factors that led him to experience mental health issues.

Hadley has previously expressed regret for any harm caused to Mr Bowen.

Now more 2GB employees have come forward claiming Hadley had a “ferocious rage” and thrived on intimidation.

The two men spoke to the ABC’s 7.30 which will air the claims on Wednesday’s program.

ABC Grandstand presenter Andrew Moore said he first experienced Hadley’s “violent temper” in 1984 when he was just 15 doing work experience at 2GB.

“He ripped the (tape) machine out, threw it against the wall, smashed into a million pieces,” Moore told 7.30.

“That was within the first five minutes of meeting him. That was an extreme case that I saw replicated.”

Moore, who later worked at 2GB as a rugby commentator, said he thought Hadley was a “bully” who “thrives on intimidation … yelling and screaming”.

He said it was his wife who eventually noticed how his work life was affecting his behaviour at home. He later went to a psychologist who said the broadcaster had contributed to his deteriorating mental health.

“I hated going to work. And I hate feeling so weak,” Moore said.

He said he complained to 2GB management via email but those ended up in Hadley’s hands who read them out on air and even laughed about the contents — albeit without mention Moore’s name.

Jesse Perez worked in the 2GB newsroom when he said he felt the wrath of Hadley.

“I was called into his studio. That situation felt like I was being fed to the lions,” he told 7.30.

“It was essentially a furious diatribe. It was a ferocious amount of rage that was directed at me. Expletives out the wazoo.

“He said that he would drag me by my effing ear … and have me out on my ass.

“I went downstairs and nearly vomited from, like, a panic. I’ve never experienced anything of that ferocity in my professional life,” Mr Perez said.

He said management did little to resolve the situation.

2GB is part of Macquarie Media which is majority owned by Channel 9 and Sydney Morning Herald parent company Nine Entertainment.

Late last month, Hadley addressed Mr Bowen’s claims in an interview with The Daily Telegraph and said the relationship was difficult at times.

“I tried to help him as much as I could,” Hadley said.

“One of the saddest parts of my broadcasting life was the end of our relationship. That came a couple of years after I was the master of ceremonies at his wedding, where he said some very generous and kind things about me, and our relationship.

“The bottom of the story is he is a fairly decent person who is having some struggles and I wish him well.”

The broadcaster went on to express regret for any harm caused to Mr Bowen.

Earlier this week on 2GB Hadley said he took “responsibility for my former behaviour”.

“I gave my word in 2013 to my fellow staff members, the sort of culture I grew up in would no longer be the standard,” he said.

In a statement to news.com.au, Macquarie Media Chief Executive Officer Adam Lang said all staff were required to adhere to a workplace behaviour policy and if any current or former employees raised a complaint it would be investigated on a confidential basis.

“The concerns raised by these three former staff members relate to allegations that are between five and 10 years old. After these allegations were first made on social media we invited anybody with a complaint to contact the company directly.

“We also contacted Mr Bowen directly to request details of his concerns and offer any support he may need given his personal circumstances as disclosed on social media. That offer remains open. To date, we have not received details of any concerns from Mr Bowen or any of the former staff members,” said Mr Lang.
