Fitzy and Wippa land late night TV talk show on Network Ten

AUSTRALIA hasn’t had a proper late night TV talk show since Rove wrapped up in 2009. But the drought is about to come to an end ... for one night only.
Nova’s loveable larrikins, Fitzy and Wippa, have somehow landed their own late night show which will air on Ten tonight.
“There’s been a lot of talk about new Tonight shows,” said Wippa to news.com.au.
“I think Larry (Emdur) is doing a pilot. Stefanovic was thinking about doing one and Rove’s back in the country. We feel like now is the time. So Fitzy and I thought if we can do what we do on radio but do it on a TV show, then that would be great fun.”
Up Reasonably Late with Fitzy & Wippa will air at 11pm tonight, and despite the late timeslot, Wippa’s convinced the show will make quite an impression.
“It’s a warning shot to the media industry, to say, ‘Hey, we’ve mastered radio and we’re looking to take on TV.’
“And you can’t say that the rule of, ‘You’ve got a great face for radio,’ applies to us ... although Fitzy is ageing a bit.”
Like every late night talk show, Up Reasonably Late will feature celebrity guests, with Guy Sebastian, Sam Burgess and Joel Creasey all locked in for appearances on tonight’s episode. But securing some big name stars wasn’t easy.
“Sure, there’s been a lot of no’s,” said Wippa.
“But there’s also been a lot of, ‘Hey, we just can’t get there’s’. Will Ferrell, he committed, but unfortunately getting here in time became an issue. He was keen though, really keen. And then there’s Jennifer Lopez, but we didn’t want her anyway to be honest because we knew we could get Guy Sebastian.”
So what can people expect if they decide to tune in tonight?
“We’ve got the 11pm timeslot and that equals wild times,” said Wippa.
“It’s kind of like a Late Show merged with Schoolies week. It’ll be sharp, but it’ll be a mess at the same time and Fitzy will probably be arrested for public drunkenness but I’ll keep it all together.”
At the very least, Wippa’s hoping people will watch Up Reasonably Late purely because there’s not a lot else on at 11pm on a Friday night.
“We’re aware of the competition, that’s how professional we are,” he said.
“The Nat Geo channel, they’re running Finding Bigfoot I think and you know that Bigfoot doesn’t exist so it’s a pointless show. Then the Discovery Channel I believe has got something like UFO’s in Europe and we know they’re not there either, so, pointless.”
So if you’re up “reasonably” late tonight, why not turn on your tele and support some great Aussie lads. From the sounds of it, they’ll need all the help they can get.
“Out of the entire family, dad’s the only one who said he’ll think about watching,” said Wippa.
“Dad’s reaction was, ‘Well, if I have an early dinner, I suppose I could go to bed and then get back up. But if I get back up, I’ll have a couple of scotches and no doubt I’ll fall asleep by the time it starts’.”
Up Reasonably Late with Fitzy & Wippa will air on Friday 27 November at 11pm on TEN and will be available on tenplay
