Dom Perrottet slams lockout laws and NIMBYs on Kyle and Jackie O’ show

Dominic Perrottet has slammed his own party’s decision to lock out Sydney and poked fun at people who complain about noise.

Premier Dominic Perrottet has reacted to calls to return to the “good old days” of city nightlife without regulation and red tape lording over Sydneysiders.

With just three days left in the run up to the latest state election, the sitting Premier is pulling out all stops to reach the voters of NSW, appearing on the Kyle and Jackie O show on KIISFM on Wednesday morning.

When confronted with Kyle’s proposal to raise speed limits on major motorways during the early hours of the morning, Mr Perrottet said he believes in a “commonsense approach”.

“We’ve got to get rid of the nanny state mentality and just have a commonsense approach to these things,” he said.

“Oh see now, you’ve just said the magic words,” Jackie O replied, adding it’s disappointing to see what has become of the city’s nightlife.

“People come here, they think we are a vibrant city, that we have a nightlife and we don’t.”

Mr Perrottet said the current government has committed a lot of work to “opening up Sydney”, including putting an end to lockout law legislation introduced in 2014 by the Liberal government.

“You can’t have a situation where one incident defines everything for everyone,” he said.

He explained lockout laws as a situation where rules were made “for rules sake, to get things done” and made clear his desire to take the bureaucracy out of the picture.

“You’ve gotta get bureaucracy out of the way, red tape, regulation, let businesses flourish and Sydney should be a 24 hour city,” he said.

“We’re Australia's only global city and we should have the most vibrant nightlife possible.”

Kyle Sandilands jumped in and asked if Mr Perrottet if he had watched the new Paramount tv series, “Last King of the Cross,” which is inspired by Sandilands’ long-time friend and nightclub owner John Ibrahim.

“That’s what we’re talking about, getting back to the good old days,” he said.

“Not those days Kyle,” Perrottet quickly reassured.

“They were the greatest days of my life,” Sandilands added.

In his sweeping tirade against the “nanny state”, Perrottet also took aim at noise complaints.

“One of the other things that I find frustrating right is that you have people complaining about noise,” he said.

He pointed to the example of a Sydney pub considered to be “one of Australia’s oldest” that made headlines in recent years after it received noise complaints from neighbours.

“People move in and then complain about the pub that's been there since Federation,” he said.

Double Bay’s 145-year-old Royal Oak Hotel was ordered to stop patrons from drinking beer near the footpath after complaints from neighbouring apartments in 2019.
