Dave Hughes talked Kate Langbroek out of quitting radio

There are some big changes coming to Dave Hughes and Kate Langbroek’s radio show this year with one of the stars moving overseas.

Dave Hughes' off-air tantrum

Kate Langbroek has revealed how Dave Hughes talked her out of quitting radio at the end of last year.

Langbroek was prepared to walk away from the Hit Network drive show she co-hosts with Hughes because she and her family are moving to Italy to live in Bologna this year.

“The reason that we left KIIS FM (at the end of 2017) was because I only wanted to sign a one-year contract because I knew that we wanted to go and live overseas this year,” Langbroek, who moves to Bologna next week, said.

“My thinking was always, ‘Well that means I’ve got to stop working.’ But Hughesy, who approaches work differently to most people, i.e. he loves it and adores it and can’t imagine life without it, he was like, ‘You’re crazy, we’ve got to keep doing the show.’

“He’s a very determined person and he had an outcome that he wanted and so there was no point in discussing the others really.”

The Hit Network was obviously keen to keep the hilarious duo on-air together in 2019 so they sent Hughesy and Kate’s executive producer, Sacha French, over to Bologna to find a studio for Langbroek to broadcast from.

For Hughes, the decision was a no-brainer, although he was a little nervous that he might have to find a new co-host if Langbroek didn’t agree to the deal.

“I was, I won’t deny it,” he told news.com.au. “In many ways (working with Langbroek) it’s the easiest thing I’ve ever done. It’s not work when I’m with her, basically. I was like, if we can make it happen that is definitely my best result.

“She took a lot of convincing to be honest but we’ve got there so let’s hope that technology will be on our side and we’ll have a fun year.”

Chatting to Hughes it’s clear that he’s still a tad scarred from when technology wasn’t on his side last year when he was broadcasting from Montreal during the Just for Laughs Festival.

In a video that went viral, the comedian spat the dummy when he couldn’t get his Skype to work at the start of the show. And Langbroek expects there’ll be similar tantrums on air this year.

“I’d be devastated if we didn’t have long distance technological nervous breakdowns which will be recorded by Jack, our anchor, and then played back to us showing each of us in a very dim light, which is what we do on our show,” she joked to news.com.au.

Langbroek, her husband and their four kids got their visas last Monday and will move to Bologna next week, but she’s adamant it will only be for a year.

“It might not even be a year if it’s a disaster,” she said.

“It’s going to be interesting, no doubt,” Hughes said about the year ahead. “If it works for her maybe I’ll do the show from somewhere overseas next year,” he laughed.

In other Hughesy and Kate news, Langbroek has a brand new podcast launching tomorrow which features one of the most popular characters from their radio show.

“It (the podcast) was born from being intrigued by romance scammers,” Langbroek told news.com.au.

“I said to Sacha (executive producer), ‘I just want to hear what they (scammers) say that is so powerful that people hand over their life savings to them.

“We set up an alter ego called Barb and we went online looking for a lover and they came like someone had thrown a bucket of burley in the water. We recorded the conversations and they’re just the greatest joy to listen to, they’re so much fun.

“We’ve put it into podcast form and it’s called Scamming The Scammer and it’s out tomorrow.”
