Comedian Jim Jefferies opens up about losing nephew Max Nugent in MRH90 Taipan army crash

An Aussie comedian has opened up about losing a beloved family member in the MRH90 Taipan helicopter crash last month.

A comedian and radio star has opened up about his family’s struggle after losing his nephew in a horror military helicopter accident.

On Friday morning, comedian Jim Jefferies spoke to Triple M’s Mick and MG about losing his nephew in the army helicopter crash off the Whitsunday Islands in July.

Jeffries, who was reportedly “very close” with his nephew Max Nugent, thanked listeners for their continued support and praised the government and military for their help during the difficult time.

“A lot of people would know that my nephew Max Nugent was one of the soldiers that passed away in the helicopter accident that happened up in Queensland with the military,” Jefferies said.

“Everyone who reached out to me and my family, it was noticed and we did feel it, it was appreciated.

“That’s the reason I didn't come on the show when I was in Australia.

“The Australian military and government people couldn’t have been more attentive.

“On behalf of me and my family, thank you very much to all the people who reached out.”

Lieutenant Nugent died along with three other men – Captain Danniel Lyon, Corporal Alexander Naggs and Warrant Officer Class Two Joseph Phillip Laycock – when they were involved in a “catastrophic” helicopter crash near the Whitsundays last month.

The military helicopter, known as a Taipan, had been engaged in a two-helicopter mission as part of Exercise Talisman Sabre when it crashed about 10.30pm on July 28.

Parts of the chopper were recovered in early August, with authorities then confirming human remains had also been recovered.

After Lieutenant Nugent’s death, Jefferies released a statement on Instagram, paying tribute to the “kind, hard working, sweet, honest human” he was.

“He couldn’t have been more loved and welcomed into this world. We had high hopes for Max and he didn’t disappoint,” the post read.

“He led his life with honour and respect and was just a great bloke.

“He’s someone I always admired, and I was so proud to call him my nephew. I still am.”
