Carrie Bickmore’s birthday gift to David ‘Hughesy’ Hughes goes terribly wrong

Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little hired a skywriter to help celebrate David ‘Hughesy’ Hughes’ 50th birthday on Thursday.

Hughesy’s epic quiz show fail

In order to help celebrate David ‘Hughesy’ Hughes’ 50th birthday on Thursday, his good mates Carrie Bickmore and her radio co-host Tommy Little hired a skywriter.

The plan was to write ‘HB Hughesy” with a love heart over Sydney, as the comedian has just made his move to the city for his new breakfast radio gig.

Fans were quick to notice the message in the sky.

Unfortunately, the skywriter made a huge blunder and forgot the second ‘H’ in his name, calling him ‘Hugesy’ instead.

The blunder was addressed on the Carrie and Tommy radio show on Thursday afternoon.

Carrie and Tommy both sang Hughesy a happy birthday while live on air.

“It’s all about you right now … it’s live. This is live. Live above the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge,” they told him as he looked out the window.

“This is incredible, I’ve never had anything like this before,” Hughesy gushed.

Bickmore asked what he had gotten for his birthday, with the comedian showing off a ring from his wife Holly with the words “You make your own reality” engraved on it.

He also got a new TV.

The hosts then asked Hughesy if he wanted to call new-found friend Kyle Sandilands back, after hanging up on him when they rushed him in to see the sky writing before it faded away.

The trio told Sandilands to look out the window.

“Is there a spelling mistake?” Tommy then realised.

“You spelled my name wrong guys,” laughed Hughesy. “Did you mean that or not?” he asked.

“Oh no!” Carrie cried.

“Look that is disappointing, but I’m flattered by that,” Hughesy admitted.

“Well we’re owed a refund from a sky writing company,” Tommy Little laughed.

Carrie addressed the blunder on Instagram.

Oh crap. Tommy and I got @dhughesy a 50TH birthday present and it was written wrong in the sky!!! Happy birthday HUGESY,” the caption read.

The conversation soon turned to Hughesy becoming Sandiland’s new competition, as he has landed the breakfast radio slot alongside Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan.

“Don’t make it weird!” urged Hughesy, but Sandilands was quick to reply.

“The last person that went up against me … Rove, we destroyed him. Merrick and Rosso, destroyed them. And Merrick even came up to me the other day, or Rosso, can’t remember, and said ‘Oh no wonder everyone listens to this show’, because I told everyone Jackie got bitten on the flap by an ant …”

The Kyle and Jackie O Show is the number one breakfast radio show in Australia.

There have been a few shake-ups in radio this week, with Hughesy and Ed moving to the breakfast slot with Erin, meaning Carrie and Tommy will now take over the drive slot.

Hughesy soon went back to talk about the misspelled name, claiming that his own management once did the same thing on one of his DVDs.

“You know what? It’s close enough,” he laughed.
