Brendan Fevola drops huge radio gossip on-air
Melbourne radio host Brendan Fevola has gone public with a huge rumour on-air this morning, leaving his team in disbelief.
Melbourne radio host Brendan Fevola has dropped a bombshell claim that will no doubt ruffle feathers in the Australian radio industry.
The co-host of Fox FM’s Fifi, Fev & Nick – which is owned by Southern Cross Austereo – said he’d been told that Kyle and Jackie O’s incredibly popular breakfast show (which airs on KIIS FM in Sydney) is set to air in Melbourne as well from next year onwards.
Speaking on Fox FM on Monday morning, Fevola told listeners he had received a phone call from someone who works in the radio industry in Sydney.
“He said, ‘You might have competition next year. Someone in our city is now gonna be in Melbourne,’” Fevola recalled. “Kyle and Jackie!”
Fevola made his feelings known right away, insisting Kyle and Jackie O wouldn’t work as a breakfast show in Melbourne.
“That’s not the right DNA,” the former AFL star said. “That’s a Sydney show. Surely they’re not coming to Melbourne … What the hell?”
Co-host Fifi Box agreed, saying about the Sydney-based stars: “You should be in Melbourne when you’re broadcasting to Melbourne.”
Currently, the KIIS FM breakfast show in Melbourne is hosted by Jason Hawkins and Lauren Phillips.
If Fevola’s intel is accurate, it would see Jase & Lauren scrapped next year in favour of syndicating the Kyle and Jackie O Show.
In response to the claim, a spokesperson from ARN (which owns the KIIS FM stations) told news.com.au: “We don’t comment on speculation and have nothing further to say.”
Sandilands has previously made no secret of his desire to have The Kyle and Jackie O Show networked Australia-wide.
In an interview back in 2021, he told news.com.au he thought ARN should ditch the local breakfast shows in each city and broadcast his program instead.
“Why wouldn’t you network this breakfast show?” Kyle said. “I think whoever is running the whole joint here mustn’t be the full quid if they don’t realise: You’re paying a lot of money, the show’s clearly number one, way out in front of everyone else. So if I was running it, it would be a different story.”
Kyle and Jackie are two of the highest paid personalities in Australia, having re-signed with ARN in 2019 in a deal which will see them remain on-air until the end of 2024.
News.com.au reported at the time the new contracts guarantee Kyle and Jackie between $7-8 million each per year.
The staggering deal means they get paid more than $39,000 each per three-and-a-half hour radio show.
It appears to be money well spent by ARN, with Kyle and Jackie O continuing to dominate in the latest round of radio ratings which were released in July.
They are currently the number one FM rated breakfast show in Sydney with a 17.1 per cent audience share
For context, their nearest FM competitor is WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda who have a 7.7 per cent audience share.
