Opposition leader Anthony Albanese has laid bare a few home truths in a tell-all interview with KIIS radio hosts Jase and Lauren.

Speaking on a wide range of topics, from bedroom attire to personal bodyguards and even an admission that he sometimes texts Scott Morrison personally, the 58-year-old definitely turned a few heads.

Mr Albanese talked through his short tenure as a DJ, admitting hype “went a bit crazy” after images of him behind the decks caused a stir on social media.

“I started doing some charity stuff for them and then it went a bit crazy. And people kind of like the idea of a daggy old MP playing stuff I like. And I played the Corner Hotel in Richmond. It was my biggest gig,” he said.

“I went there and the guy I was with, I was like, ‘Are you serious? This is a serious venue and I’m just having a bit of fun.’ And they were like, ‘No, people come, it’s Melbourne.’ And they did.”

The Labor leader wasn’t going to let the topical issue of Scott Morrison’s trip to Glasgow go through to the wicketkeeper. Mr Albanese said he thought the PM wouldn’t have enjoyed his climate summit visit and being face-to-face with French President Emmanuel Macron amid Australia’s submarine fracas with the EU heavyweight.

“I don‘t think he enjoyed Glasgow, I’ve got to tell you,” he said, saying the PM “looked a bit lonely on the photo day”.

The Opposition leader talked through what it was like dealing with bodyguards, and admitted he sometimes texts Scott Morrison.

“It reminded me of his trip to Cobargo, trying to shake hands with people who didn‘t really want to shake his hand.”

The interview quickly turned personal - this was FM radio, after all - with Mr Albanese quizzed on his bedtime attire.

“What do you wear to bed?” the hosts asked.

“That’s pretty personal. Nothing,” Mr Albanese replied, to their surprise.

“You are a nudist. You were staring in my eyes when you said that,” one host said.

“To be honest, I was expecting like, flannel pyjamas with ducks on them or something.”

“Nope,” said Mr Albanese.

“What if there is a home invasion? You are the Opposition Leader, imagine that footage getting out,” the hosts probed.

“Well, I think if there‘s a home invasion, the footage isn’t the real problem. The home invasion, that’s the point of a home invasion,” Mr Albanese responded.

After a short pause, the Opposition Leader moved on with the next question, admitting he almost cried when his beloved Souths went down in the 2021 NRL Grand Final.

“That was pretty sad. I didn‘t really cry. But I was sad. I am not a big crier.”

Mr Albanese shared a glimpse of what life was like as a high ranking politician, revealing he has “various security available at various times” and “can have security whenever I ask for it” during election periods.

“They (bodyguards) came to me and said prior to election day, they said there‘s been some various threats and we want to give you security on the day,” he said.

“I said, ‘Okay. But can it be subtle? Can I drive?’ ’No, you can’t drive yourself. We’ll be there.’ So, we met outside. I walked outside my house to meet them at seven o’clock in the morning.

“There was a guy there, he was 6’10. He was in an all-white suit. He looked like something out of a James Bond movie.

“He was huge and there was a man and a woman and were both unbelievable. They looked like fit supermodels, but trained killers. And they had to wear coats, of course, because they were ‘packing’.

“So, it was a really hot day and I walk out to these polling booths with one either side. ‘Vote for me or else.’”
